    • An exemplary apparatus and method for applying a force to rails of a track is disclosed. The apparatus has a device with at least one first weight and at least one second weight rotatably mounted about a horizontal shaft which has an axis which is essentially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the rails. A power source is provided to drive the rotation of the at least one first weight and the at least one second weight at different revolutions per second. The rotation of the at least one first weight and the at least one second weight creates a vertical force which has a larger downward component as compared to an upward component of the vertical force.

    • A rail vehicle having a single frame assembly and a movable platform coupled thereto is provided. The rail vehicle indexes, i.e. advances intermittently, along railroad rails. The movable platform advances in a single direction at a generally steady speed as the rail vehicle indexes along a railroad. The platform is the floor of, or a base for, a cabin preferably having a seat, roof support, and controls for the operator. The platform rides longitudinally with the machine on rollers or slides, thus separating the operator and controls from the rest of the machine. Thus, while the rail vehicle moves in an abrupt stop-and-go manner, the platform and the operator move generally consistently in a single direction.

    • An anchor spreader apparatus and method for moving rail anchors, the anchor spreader apparatus has a mounting member, a rail clamp assembly and an anchor-engaging assembly. With the rail clamp assembly properly clamped to the rail, the anchor spreader apparatus is maintained in a proper and controlled position relative to the anchor as the anchor-engaging assembly is rotatably moved relative to the rail clamp assembly. The anchor spreader apparatus may be paired with a spike-pulling apparatus, whereby the anchor spreader apparatus and the spike-pulling apparatus simultaneously move the rail anchor and pull respective spikes.

    • An x-ray target assembly is formed by passing a rotary shaft through the center hole of a graphite disk such that the back surface of the disk rests on a flange part of the rotary shaft and the front surface is contacted by a nut which engages with the tip of the rotary shaft. Annular brazing materials are placed adjacent contact areas where the disk contacts the rotary shaft and the nut such that braze joints are made to secure the disk with the nut and the rotary shaft. Grooves may be formed on the surfaces of the nut and the flange part of the rotary shaft which contact the disk such that the brazing material can more efficiently fill the gaps between contacting surfaces.

    • A graphite-backed metallic x-ray tube target assembly has a rotary shaft which passes through the central opening of the annular graphite substrate and is secured to the metallic disk-shaped target. In order to protect the shaft from heat radiated from the graphite substrate, at least one tubular heat shield is brazed to the target and disposed between and separate from the inner wall of the annular graphite substrate and the outer peripheral surface of the shaft. For further protection, a tubular heat shielding member may be disposed inside the other heat shield, between the outer heat shield and the shaft. In order to minimize the heat conduction from the outer heat shield to the inner heat shielding member, they are mostly separated and attached to each other only along their bottom edges where they are tack-welded together at mutually separated positions such that the inner heat shielding member is supported entirely by the outer heat shield.
