    • The pinion is of two-piece construction, the two pieces being identical and nestably mated to define a recess, therebetween, which is interrupted by abutments, and which confines an abutment-engaging pin. Each piece has a plurality of teeth projecting therefrom, and the pieces are so mated that the teeth pluralities project form opposite sides of the formed pinion. A generally U-shaped rack, having teeth formed on the confronting surfaces of the parallel limbs thereof, is in mesh with the pinion, and the pin penetrates an input shaft upon which the pinion is mounted. As the shaft is turned in one direction, the pin drivingly engages the abutments of only one pinion piece, to cause the teeth of the latter to drive the rack in one, given direction. Too, if the shaft is turned in the opposite direction, the pin engages the abutments of only the other pinion piece, to cause its teeth to drive the rack in the same, one, given direction.

    • A vertical panic exit device is interchangeably mountable on either left-hand opening or right-hand opening doors and comprises a latch mechanism for engagement with a strike mounted to a doorjamb to alternately transition a door mounted to the jamb in a latched and unlatched configuration. A central portion includes a push bar; an action rod interlinked to said push bar such that a depression of the push bar causes the action rod to be translated in a direction orthogonal to the push bar, and a center case mechanism movable between a latched and an unlatched position. The center case mechanism comprises a housing, and a main link carriage horizontally slidably mounted within the housing. The main link carriage is linked to and is acted upon by the action rod for translation between the latched and unlatched position. An actuator link has a first end pivotally attached to the main link carriage. A pivoting member is pivotally mounted to the housing and has first and second pivotal attach points. A second end of the actuator link is selectively coupled to one of either the first or second attach points. When the second end of the actuator link is selectively coupled to the first attach point, it configures the center case mechanism for latching and unlatching a right handed opening door, and when selectively coupled to the second attach point, it configures the center case mechanism for latching and unlatching a left handed opening door. A slider is vertically slidably mounted within the housing and is in movable engagement with the pivoting member such that a pivoting motion of the pivoting member causes the slider to slide in a vertical direction. The slider includes at least one attach point for connection with the latch mechanism.

    • A fluid shear coupling apparatus is disclosed herein which includes a driving member received within a working chamber defined by a driven member. The driven member is mounted with needle bearings to a shaft portion of the driving member to have the members rotatable about a common axis. The driving and driven members include complementary shaped and positioned fluid shear and thrust surfaces defining fluid shear and thrust chambers, respectively, therebetween and cooperable with shear fluid within the chamber to transmit torque and axial thrust loads between the members. The fluid shear surfaces are defined by interdigitated ridges and grooves. A shear fluid reservoir is located in the central portion of the driven member and passageways lead from an annular groove and cylindrical cavity adjacent the driving member back to the reservoir. A recycle passageway also leading from the annular groove and connects with the working chamber at a radially-inward location to provide recirculation of shear fluid through the working chamber. Several projections and dams are received within the cylindrical cavity and annular groove to provide shear surfaces for transmitting torque between the driving and driven members, and also to facilitate the pumping of the shear fluid from the working chamber back to the reservoir or through the recycle flow path.

    • An overhead mounted door holder assembly for attachment between a door jamb and a door, to hold the door in an open position, includes a jamb bracket attached to the door jamb and a jamb arm pivotally attached to the jamb bracket. A channel assembly having a longitudinally extending channel is attached to the door, and first and second end caps are attachable to opposing ends of the channel assembly, with each end cap being held by a retaining key in locked connection with the channel assembly. The first and second end caps are configured to allow alternate positioning of the channel assembly inset in a top of the door or attached to a side of the door. A hold open stop is fixably held in the channel of the channel assembly. The hold open stop is configured to have a stop element for engaging a slide assembly pivotally attached to the jamb arm and positioned for longitudinal movement in the channel. The slide assembly is configured to engage the stop element of the hold open stop and hold the door in an open position. The force required to engage the hold open stop and the slide assembly is determined by the position of an adjustment wedge.
