    • 766,187. Cylinder cooling and construction; combustion chambers. RICARDO & CO. ENGINEERS (1927), Ltd. Nov. 3, 1954 [Nov. 26, 1953], No. 32905/53. Classes 7 (2) and 7 (3). Upper and lower faces N 1 , N of a watercooled cylinder head form with side walls N 2 a coolant chamber, there being integral with the face N a buttress wall (or walls) P lying closely around the (or each) cylinder combustion space as seen in plan view, allowing the ingress and egress of water to and from the space it surrounds and acted on by spaced holding-down nuts P 2 or the like. Water flows from a cylinder jacket M via ducts Q over liquid-injection combustion pockets N 8 , the outer walls O 2 of which act as part of the walls P, passing via bores O 4 around inlet and exhaust guides N' and over the walls P to exit ports N 10 . An additional duct Q 1 or ducts may communicate with the cylinder jacket M. The pockets N 8 have multiple-bore inserts O having limited contact therewith. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the buttress walls have a common section between adjacent cylinders of a side-valve spark-ignition engine block, and have supporting spurs above the cylinder bore, whilst the exit port is in the upper head face. In a further modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the buttress wall of a single cylinder head interconnects the upper and lower head faces, water entering the head at the cylinder side remote from a liquid-injection combustion pocket, passing above the cylinder bore via an aperture in the lower part of the buttress wall and over lowered portions of the wall on either side of the combustion pocket to an exit duct in the side face of the head.
