    • A method and apparatus for converting a color digital image into a grayscale digital image is disclosed. First, each green intensity value in the color digital image is copied into a corresponding pixel location of the grayscale digital image. Then for each red intensity value in the color digital image, the red intensity value is adjusted to match a local dynamic range of green intensity values. The adjusted red intensity value is inserted into the corresponding pixel location of the grayscale digital image. Then for each blue intensity value in the color image, the blue intensity value is adjusted to match a local dynamic range of green intensity values. The adjusted blue intensity value is inserted into the corresponding pixel location of the grayscale digital image.

    • A method of filtering and a degraining filter employ lowest edge activity (LEA) to assign a pixel value in a filtered image. A method of filtering includes selecting a set of pixels that includes a central pixel and pixels surrounding the central pixel from a digital image. The set has a plurality of subsets of pixels where at least one subset includes the central pixel. The method of filtering further includes assigning a value of a corresponding central pixel in a filtered image. The assigned value is a mean value of pixels in an identified subset of the plurality having the LEA. A degraining filter includes a processor, a memory and a computer program having instruction that implement selecting the set, identifying the subset with LEA and assigning the value.

    • A method and imaging systems that process images employ image binarization. An image processing system includes a processor, a memory and a computer program stored in the memory and executed by the processor. A scanning system includes a scanner that scans an image source to produce a grayscale image and an image processor that includes a computer program. The respective computer programs include instructions that implement image binarization. The method of image binarization includes generating a solid fills binary image from a grayscale image and generating an edge enhanced binary image from the grayscale image. The method further includes combining the generated binary images to produce a composite binary image and providing the composite binary image as an output binary image.
