    • A method of joining multiple components includes stacking the components vertically. Each component includes two opposite substantially planar surfaces that are arranged in a column when the components are stacked. The method also includes placing the stacked components in a clinch-crimping apparatus having a first punch, a second punch, and a crimping element. The method also includes displacing a section of the substantially planar surfaces of the stacked components by driving the first punch in a first direction that is substantially perpendicular to the surfaces. The method additionally includes retracting the first punch from the displaced section and crimping the displaced section by the crimping element to form a crush initiator. The method additionally includes disengaging the crimping element from the crimped, displaced section. Furthermore, the method includes clinching the crimped, displaced section by driving the second punch in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction.

    • Disclosed are wire feeding devices having a wire feeding pipe and a feed unit that pushes a wire through the wire feeding pipe. Either the wire feeding pipe comprises a two- way shape-memory alloy or the wire feeding pipe has an attached, over-lapping, or inserted extension segment extending beyond a distal end of the wire feeding pipe, the extension section comprising a two-way shape-memory alloy. The two-way shape-memory alloy has a trained shape in a martensite phase having a passageway for a wire and a trained shape in an austenite phase having a passageway for a wire that is narrower than the martensite phase passageway. When heated to the austenite phase of the two-way shape-memory alloy, the narrower passageway applies pressure to straighten a bend in the wire.

    • A welding apparatus for welding a work-piece includes an energy source configured to generate a weld in a zone of the work-piece, with the work-piece characterized by a layer. The apparatus also includes a first wheel characterized by a first circumference and a first set of protrusions disposed on the first circumference, and a second wheel characterized by a second circumference and a second set of protrusions disposed on the second circumference. Each of the first and second wheels is configured to rotate relative to the work-piece, and the first and second sets of protrusions are configured to disrupt the layer as the work-piece is traversed between the first and second wheels. The energy source generates the weld in the zone of the work-piece following the disruption of the layer. A method employing the disclosed welding apparatus is also provided.

    • User interfaces and computer enabled methods for defining, discovering, and viewing map layers are provided. The map layers annotate an existing map by providing additional information that is not present in the existing map. A contribution user interface receives and configures the map layer on a web browser. The contribution user interface allows the map layer to be positioned over a desired location and displayed as a semi-transparent image overlay superimposed over the existing map. The map layer may be enlarged, reduced, and rotated to match the features of the existing map. The map layer is stored for use by other users. The layer may be retrieved by users who search for the desired location or for related or nearby locations. The layer may be displayed as a search result, and may be displayed for viewing by users as a partially-transparent image overlay over the existing map.
