    • Disclosed herewith is a scalable disk array controller inter-connection network to be employed for a disk array system in which a plurality of disk array controllers connected to each another are expected to be operated as one disk array controller. The inter-connection network enables such disk array controllers to be added/removed without service interruption while the system reliability is kept as is. Each of the plurality of disk array controllers comprises a channel IF unit; a disk IF unit; a cache memory unit; a shared memory unit; means for connecting the channel IF unit/disk IF unit and the cache memory unit; and means for connecting the channel IF unit/disk IF unit and the shared memory unit. The inter-connection network comprises a plurality of switches to be increased in a scalable manner. Each of the switches is inter-connected with other switches with use of a redundant path having a separated physical route. In addition, each of the switches has an output destination table used to set redundant paths and switches between paths after the inter-connection network is modified due to the addition/removal of the above switches. The disk array controller becomes cost-scalable because the disk array controller units can be added/removed to/from the system as required without service interruption while the system reliability is kept as is.

    • A first storage system is connected to a second storage system, and an external device within the first storage system is provided to a host as a device of the second storage system. The second storage system includes a cache control section having cache adaptors, each controlling a disk and a cache, a protocol conversion section including protocol adaptors that switch requests from the host to appropriate ones of the cache adaptors, a management adaptor, and an internal network that mutually connects the cache adaptors, the protocol adaptors and the management adaptor. The first storage system being connected to any of the protocol adaptors is connected to the second storage system. The second storage system executes a processing for the external device by the cache control section, or connects to the first storage system through the protocol conversion section without the cache control section executing processing for the external device.

    • A storage system encrypts plain text from an external device and stores the cryptogram into a disk unit, decrypts stored data in the disk unit and transmits decrypted text to the external device. The plain and decrypted text must be in agreement when seen from the external device. If a failure occurs in the encrypting or decrypting process, the plain and decrypted text disagree. The storage system includes an encryption unit for encrypting first data, a decryption unit for decrypting the encrypted data into second data, and a comparison unit for comparing the first and second data. When the first and second data do not agree, the first data is encrypted by a different encryption unit and the encrypted data is decrypted into third data, whereupon the first and third data are compared. When the first and third data do not agree, a failure report is sent.
