    • In a modular switching device that includes a plurality of packet processors interconnected by a plurality of connecting devices, one or more data packets are received at a first packet processor. The first packet processor generates a communication frame that includes at least a portion of a first data packet among the one or more data packets. The first packet processor divides the communication frame into a plurality of transmission units, includes a communication frame identifier in respective transmission units, and includes a respective position identifier in respective transmission units. The transmission units are transmitted to the plurality of connecting devices via a first plurality of uplinks, and the plurality of connecting devices transmits the transmission units to the second packet processor via a second plurality of uplinks. The communication frame is reassembled from the plurality of transmission units using the communication frame identifier and the position identifiers.

    • A network switch including a plurality of stack units sequentially linked to each other. Each stack unit includes a port, a forwarding engine, a first interface, and a second interface. The second interface of each stack unit is linked to the first interface of a subsequent stack unit. The second interface of a last stack unit is linked to the first interface of a first stack unit. In response to a packet traveling in a first direction from the first stack unit to the last stack unit and a link between a second stack unit and a third stack unit being inoperative, the forwarding engine of the second stack unit returns the packet in a second direction to a preceding stack unit. The packet travels in the second direction from the preceding stack unit to the first stack unit, to the last stack unit, and to the third stack unit.

    • A switch includes ports including a first port and a second port. A processor approves associations between the ports and addresses of packets. A memory stores entries having respective indicators indicating approval of an association between respective ports and addresses. The first port receives a first packet sent to the switch. The controller: determines whether one of the entries includes an address of the first packet; if none of the entries includes the address of the first packet, sends a first message to the processor requesting approval of the first packet; if one of the entries includes the address of the first packet, determines whether the indicator of the one of the entries indicates approval and based on this, sends the first message to the processor; receives a response from the processor based on the first message; and based on the response, forwards the first packet to the second port.

    • A multi-unit switch includes a plurality of network devices, and a central switch communicatively. The central switch includes a forwarding database for making virtual port forwarding decisions, the forwarding database being populated with virtual port entries corresponding to virtual ports of the central switch, ones of the virtual ports mapped to corresponding ones of physical ports of the plurality of network devices. The central switch is configured to make forwarding decisions to determine virtual ports to which packets are to be forwarded, and forward packets to appropriate physical ports of the central switch based on the virtual port forwarding decisions based on the mapping of virtual ports to physical ports. Network devices are configured to receive packets from the central switch and to forward the received packets to appropriate physical ports of the network devices responsively to indications of the virtual port forwarding decisions made by the central switch.
