    • Disclosed is a multilayer packaging material which is suitable for use as a container for malt beverages and which is tinted so as to block at least 90% of light with wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation ranging from 300 nm to 500 nm. The tinted multilayer packaging materials of the present invention includes: (a) at least one layer of a carbon dioxide (CO.sub.2)-permeable polymeric packaging material, and (b) at least one layer of a CO.sub.2 -treated gas barrier coating, which has an oxygen permeability constant not more than 0.05 cubic centimeter-mil/100 square inches/atmosphere/day. The CO.sub.2 -permeable packaging material can be any polymeric material through which CO.sub.2 can pass and which can be used as a packaging material for food or beverages. The gas barrier coating has an oxygen permeability constant, before CO.sub.2 treatment, of less than 0.3. This gas barrier coating includes the reaction product of a polyamine (A) and a polyepoxide (B). The polyamine (A) can be an initial polyamine or an ungelled polyamine adduct having active amine hydrogens. Polyepoxide (B) can be a polyepoxide having a plurality of glycidyl groups linked to an aromatic member.

    • Disclosed is a multilayer packaging material which is suitable for use as a container for malt beverages and which is tinted so as to block at least 90% of light with wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation ranging from 300 nm to 500 nm.     • The present invention provides an apparatus for controlling the spray of positively-charged coating particles towards a grounded or negatively-charged dielectric material having a dielectric constant less than 4.0 and in the form of a hollow container. This apparatus includes: (a) a device for inducing a positive charge onto a coating composition, (b) a device for creating a field of positively-charged coating particles, (c) a device for supporting a series of hollow containers in spaced relation to one another which includes a series of vertically-oriented spindles, (d) a device for transporting the spindles in series through the field of positively-charged coating particles, (e) a gripping chuck made from, or coated with, a dielectric material, or both, mounted to the upper end of a spindle, the chuck having a recess defined therein for receiving the opening of a hollow container, and (f) a grounding device positioned such that, when the dielectric container is in the path of the sprayed, positively-charged coating particles the grounding device is also in the path but shielded therefrom by the dielectric material. The grounding device is insulated from direct electrical contact with the supported container. The grounding device can be replaced by an internal charging device for inducing a negative charge onto a hollow container being supported by the gripping chuck. Moreover, the grounding device or the internal charging device can be used in conjunction with an external charging device for inducing a negative charge onto a hollow container being supported by the gripping chuck.

    • Multilayer packaging materials and multilayer containers including a barrier material having excellent resistance to gas permeability are provided. The multilayer packaging materials and containers include at least one permeable polymeric material and at least one layer of a barrier material which is a reaction product of: (i) an ungelled amine-functional polymeric resin, which is a reaction product of a polyamine and a polyfunctional material having at least two functional groups reactive with said polyamine, the ungelled polymeric resin further containing an average of greater than two polyamine moieties per molecule within said resin; and (ii) a material selected from the group consisting of a polyepoxide, a polyoxalate or mixtures thereof, the barrier material characterized as containing at least about four percent by weight amine nitrogen and having an oxygen permeability of less than about 3 cc-mil/100 in.sup.2 -day-atmosphere and a carbon dioxide permeability of less than about 15 cc-mil/100 in.sup.2 -day-atmosphere at 23.degree. C. and zero percent relative humidity. The barrier material can be formed from coating compositions including as co-curable resinous materials, e.g., a polyepoxide and an ungelled amine-functional polymeric resin formed from a polyepoxide and a polyamine having up to about two primary amino nitrogen groups per molecule, the polyamine and polyepoxide present in a reaction mixture at a molar ratio of from about 1.4:1 to about 0.83:1.
