    • A lighting system includes a housing with a rear plate and upper and lower plates extending forwardly and with side plates extending forward coupling the upper and lower plats and with a cover essentially parallel with the rear plate to define a chamber there within. A light source is formed in a generally cylindrical configuration within the chamber. The light source has an axis within a horizontal plane. A reflector includes a lower component in a semi-circular configuration with an axis of rotation coextensive with the xis of the light source. The lower component also has upper ends terminating at the horizontal plane, a forward edge adjacent to the cover, and a rearward edge adjacent to the rear plate. The reflector has an upper component extending upwardly and forwardly from the rearward edge of the lower component in a parabolic configuration and terminating above and forwardly of the forward edge.

    • A system for enabling successful use of HID lamps in aircraft, including in particular high power lamps for use as landing lights and taxi lights, utilizes a sealed beam HID lamp which during normal operation has an external temperature considerably lower than the external temperature of a quartz halogen or incandescent sealed beam lamp of equivalent light output. The lower external temperature arises in part from the use of a gas fill in the sealed beam. A detector is provided to monitor the seal integrity of the sealed beam HID lamp and further to provide a response to seal failure resulting in disablement of the lamp. Exemplary ways for accomplishing seal failure detection include radioactive detection, pressure monitoring, and chemical sensing, or other ways wherein detection of a failed seal is followed by an electrical output used to terminate or preclude lamp operation.

    • A method for replacing non-HID landing and taxi lights in an aircraft wing housing that originally was designed to contain the non-HID landing and taxi lights in side-by-side relationship, is accomplished by installing an HID landing light, an HID taxi light and a power control device in the space originally designed to accommodate the non-HID landing and taxi lights. A single ballast provides power to both lamps which each comprise a housing, an HID bulb supported within the housing, a lens for passage of light from the HID bulb out of the housing, a primary reflector surface disposed behind the HID bulb, and a secondary reflector surface disposed in front of the bulb for reflecting light from the bulb back through the bulb for further forward reflection from the primary reflector surface through the lens. The lens may have a lenticular array including a plurality of cylindrical surface elements for spreading the light beam emitted by the lamp. An HID igniter may be located within the lamp's housing behind the reflector surface and electrically connected to the HID bulb.
