    • One embodiment of a position and time-at-position logging apparatus includes a GPS receiver, a microprocessor, memory, a keypad and a data port. The apparatus receives GPS signals and determines therefrom position and time-at-position information of the apparatus, and logs the information in memory in response to a key depression in a manual mode of operation, or in response to a data capture signal in an automatic mode of operation. The data port may be connected to an input device for generating the data capture signal, an output device for data reporting, or to a computer operable to program an operational mode of the apparatus or download a number of sets of information for processing by report generating software resident therein. The apparatus may optionally include a radio transceiver for exchanging data and/or programming information with a remote source, and may further include a vehicle data port for receiving operational data in accordance with various vehicle/engine operating parameters.

    • An induction-hardening machine for the contour hardening of cross-axis, intersecting-axis and nonintersecting-axis gears such as hypoid gears includes a programmable logic control unit, a source of quench liquid and a high-frequency induction generator which are operably connected to a high-frequency induction coil which is disposed at an inclined angle above the horizontally disposed workpiece (hypoid gear). Fluid connections are made between the source of quench liquid and the induction coil for the rapid delivery of quench liquid. The support platform for the hypoid gear is connected to a rotary drive motor and with the hypoid gear rotating at approximately 900 to 1800 RPM the induction coil is energized with four low energy pulses of relatively short duration. The final heating step is a high energy pulse followed immediately by the quenching step. The induction coil is also offset from the geometric center of the gear and it is this offset and the inclined angle of the induction coil which address the heel to toe tooth differences and the spiral configuration of a hypoid gear.

    • An induction-hardening machine for the contour hardening of machine components such as gears includes a system processor which controls thyristor power switching circuits which supply high-power signals to an RF generator. Power switching circuits include silicon controlled rectifiers of SCR's. In order to overcome the variable "on time" characteristics of SCR devices, a zero crossing detector is implemented and time periods are calculated so that the system processor activates the SCR circuits to supply power to the RF generator at predetermined times. The system processor 12 will deactivate the SCR circuits at or just prior to a zero crossing referenced from the predetermined activation time thereby effectively controlling the one time of the SCR circuits with an accuracy of up to five ten thousandths of a second. The signal produced by the RD generator is supplied to an induction heater coil which is used to case harden the gear teeth of a machine component or gear.

    • An first induction hardening coil assembly according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises a coil having a top surface, an underside surface, and an inner coil curvature disposed between the top surface and the underside surface. The inner coil curvature extends approximately 180 degrees around a coil axis. The coil further includes a first end section adjacent a first end of the inner coil curvature which extends between the top surface and the underside surface. A second end section adjacent a second end of the inner coil curvature extends between the top surface and the underside surface. A support arm is connected to the coil and is constructed and arranged for providing an electrical connection between the coil and a source of electrical current. The support arm includes a current-in portion connected to the underside surface adjacent the first end section and a current-out portion connected to the top surface at a location which is between the first and second end sections. In a cooperating, second induction hardening coil assembly which is used with the first coil assembly for a split pin pair, the current-in portion of the support arm is connected to the top surface adjacent the first end section. The current-out portion of the support arm is connected to the underside surface adjacent the first end section.
