    • The invention relates to a data processing method comprising generating meta-data for each data file stored by back-up servers of a set of back-up servers on a storage medium of a plurality of storage media. The meta-data of a data file comprises the file name of the data file, a content-specific identifier and an access path for the data file. The content-specific identifier relates to the data content comprised in the data file and the access path specifies on which storage medium on the plurality of storage media the data file is stored. The method further comprises storing the meta-data of each data file in a database, wherein the database enables the identification of data files having the same data content by use of the content-specific identifiers of the data files as these data files have identical content-specific identifiers.

    • A method of managing remote storage sets retention grace period, an archive retention period, and a backup retention period all equal to the same time period. In response to receiving a request to migrate a file to remote storage by any one of HSM, archive, or backup, the method creates a stub of the file, stores the stub in local storage, moves the file to remote storage, and backs up the file at the remote storage. In response to receiving a request to access an HSM file, the method determines if the requested file is in HSM remote storage; if so, the method returns the requested file from remote storage; if not; the method determines if the requested file is in archive remote storage or backup storage and, if so, returns the requested file from said remote storage.     • A method for managing a mass storage system wherein the mass storage system comprises a first storage space and a second storage space. A file index is generated which lists in a uniformly distributed way each file along with a first characteristic quantity, a second characteristic quantity, and a status information, wherein the status information specifies if the file is held on the first storage space or on the second storage space. A sample of files is selected from the file index. The sample of files contains a given number of files, wherein the status information of each file of the given number of files specifies the file to be held on the first storage space. The first critical value is determined by use of the first characteristic quantity of each file comprised in the sample of files and a second critical value is determined by use of the second characteristic quantity of each file of the sample of files. Then, a first subset of files comprising each file for which the first characteristic quantity is larger than the first critical value and for which the second characteristic quantity is larger than the second critical value and which is specified by the status information to be held on the first storage device is determined.
