    • In summary, the present invention is an information and advertising distribution system. A data server stores and updates a database of information items and advertisements. The information items and advertisements are each categorized so that each has an associated information category. Workstations remotely located from the data server each include a display device, a communication interface for receiving at least a subset of the information items and advertisements in the data server's database and local memory for storing the information items and advertisements received from the data server. An information administrator in each workstation establishes communication with the data server from time to time so as to update the information items and advertisements stored in local memory with at least a subset of the information items and advertisements stored by the data server. An information display controller in each workstation displays on the workstation's display device at least a subset of the information items and advertisements stored in local memory when the workstation meets predefined idleness criteria. At least a subset of the workstations include a profiler for storing subscriber profile data. The subscriber profile data represents subscriber information viewing preferences, indicating information categories for which the subscriber does and does not want to view information items. The information display controller includes a filter for excluding from the information items displayed on the display device those information items inconsistent with the subscriber profile data.

    • A flowing gas laser of the kind normally operating in the glow discharge mode and having a glow discharge region through which the gas flows while the glow discharge occurs, employs one or an array of flow smoothing screens disposed in series in the gas flow path in a manner that enables the input power loading to be increased without causing arcing in the electric discharge of the lasing gas. The screens are disposed upstream of the glow discharge region and cause smoothing of small scale turbulence in the gas flow. The screen closest to the discharge region is spaced from the beginning of that region by a distance not less than ten times the distance between adjacent holes of the screen. Successive screens in the series array are spaced at intervals sufficient to enable the requisite flow smoothing by each screen to occur before the flow encounters the next screen of the array.

    • An ion mobility and mass spectrometer instrument includes an ion source region coupled to an ion mobility spectrometer having an ion outlet coupled to a quadrupole mass filter. An output of the filter is coupled to a collision cell which has an ion outlet coupled to an ion acceleration region of a mass spectrometer such as a time of flight mass spectrometer. The instrument is particularly well suited for sequencing analysis wherein a sample is ionized and a resulting three-dimensional ion spectrum (ion intensity vs. ion mobility and ion mass) is observed. If the spectrum reveals that no ions overlap in mobility values, the collision cell is filled with a suitable buffer gas and the instrument is reactivated whereby a complete three-dimensional spectrum of parent and daughter ions results. If, however, the original spectrum reveals that two or more ions overlap in ion mobility values, the collision cell is filled with a buffer gas and the quadrupole mass filter is controlled to selectively filter out all but one of the ions having overlapping mobility values. The instrument is reactivated, and the quadrupole mass filter is selectively controlled, as many times as mobility overlap occurs to thereby provide complete three-dimensional spectra of parent and daughter ions resulting from fragmentation. Various configurations of mass filter, ion trap and collision cell positioning, relative to the ion mobility and mass spectrometer instruments, are contemplated.
