    • A steam-stripping process suitable for the removal of impurities from polysaccharides, including soluble starch hydrolysates, is disclosed herein. This process may be used in combination with other purification processes, such as ultrafiltration, ion exchange, treatment with activated carbon, as well as bleaching process. Soluble starch hydrolysates may also be purified by a combination of ultrafiltration or activated carbon treatment and bleaching. In these processes, the polysaccharide or the soluble starch hydrolysate produced is bland in flavor, free of off-odor, optionally, lighter or white in color and suitable for use in systems requiring these characteristics. Other purification process combinations which are disclosed for removal of undesirable flavors, odors and/or colors from polysaccharides include: 1) ultrafiltration and carbon treatment; 2) ultrafiltration and steam-stripping; 3) steam-stripping and carbon treatment; 4) ion exchange treatment and ultrafiltration; 5) ion exchange treatment and steam-stripping; and 6) ion exchange treatment and carbon treatment. A bleaching process may precede any of these processes. If ozone or a peroxide is employed, the bleaching step may follow any of these processes. Any of the processes may be combined with other processes disclosed herein to provide additional purification measures. The processes are particularly useful for purification of low molecular weight soluble polysaccharide hydrolysates, such as dextrins. These purified polysaccharides are used in improved foods, adhesives, pharmaceuticals and like products.

    • An aircraft assembly comprising: a pair of covers; a spar web extending between the covers in a thickness direction, the spar web having a length which extends in a span-wise direction; and a container which extends from the spar web and houses at least part of a system component. The container comprises first and second side walls which are spaced apart from each other across the spar web in the thickness direction, and inboard and outboard walls which are spaced apart from each other along the spar web in the span-wise direction. The spar web and at least part of the container are integrally formed as a single piece. Typically the assembly is a wing assembly with a fuel tank; a track; a high-lift device carried by the track; an actuation mechanism for moving the track and high-lift device between an extended high-lift position and a retracted low-lift position; and a track container which extends from the spar web into the fuel tank and houses at least part of the track when it is in its retracted low-lift position. The spar web and at least part of the track container are integrally formed as a single piece, typically from a laminar composite material.

    • A process for the extrusion of gelled products, such as jelly gum confectionaries, in a cooker of former extruder uses unique spray-dried pregelatinized high amylose starches alone or in blends with selected starches to provide extrudates which quickly set and form gels. The products typically contain about 10-18% of the starch (on a dry solids basis), about 70-90% of a sweetener, up to 20% water, and up to 20% of conventional confectionary or pharmaceutical ingredients. The mixture may be heated to about 93.degree. C. (200.degree.-240.degree. F.) prior to extrusion to provide a flowable mixture. The spray-dried, pregelatinized high amylose starches (unmodified or modified) are prepared by a simultaneous steam atomization and spray-drying by process which provides a pregelatinized granular starch or a continuous coupled jet-cooking and spray-drying process which provides a pregelatinized dispersed starch which is substantially non-crystalline and substantially non-retrograded.
