    • A tape reel for a tape cassette wherein a pair of such reels are contained, comprising an upper flange and a hub which consists of a drum formed integrally with (formed in one piece with, or solidly joined to) a lower flange. The drum comprises an outer cylindrical part on which a tape is wound and an inner cylindrical part which permits the insertion of a driving shaft of a recording-reproducing device for the tape cassette. The inner cylindrical part has projections adapted to engage with the driving shaft, each said projection having a groove formed on the back side for thickness reduction, and the inner cylindrical part and inner ends and both side walls of the projections all have the same thickness. A plurality of connecting ribs are provided joining the outer and inner cylindrical parts of the drum, and extensions are formed outwardly on the inner cylindrical part, on both shoulder portions close to each said connecting rib. Alternatively, a plurality of ribs are formed along the inner circumference of the outer cylindrical part, extending from the outer cylindrical part toward, but short of, the inner cylindrical part.

The tape cassette includes a covering member rotatably mounted to the housing to cover the tape member placed at a front of the housing, and a lock member provided inside the housing to lock the covering member in a closed state. The lock member is rotated together with the main body and is provided with rotation shafts pivotally supported in the housing, an engagement projection rotating around the axis between the locked position engaging with the covering member and the locked position not engaging with the covering member, biasing members for biasing the engagement projection toward the locked position, and an unlock member for shifting the engagement projection toward an unlocked position. The biasing member is integrally connected with the main body at a remote position from the engagement projection and the unlock member.

    • When a guide wall formed in the lower casing of a tape cassette housing for guiding a brake release member is extended upward into the upper casing, the corresponding part of the upper casing must be cut off to provide a recess. The recess, located in the central part of the upper casing, reduces the structural strength of the upper casing. Also there are problems of deformation of the cassette wall parts subject to the urging of the spring member and development of a gap between the mating edges of the upper and lower casings during storage at elevated temperature. The present invention is directed to the solution of the problems.In a tape cassette which includes a housing comprised of upper and lower casings, a pair of tape reels turnably held in the housing, and a brake mechanism comprising reel brake members and a brake release member all of which are located in the front part of the housing and between the pair of tape reels, in an arrangement such that, when the cassette is not in use, the brake members are urged by a spring member in directions where they are in mesh with serrated flange peripheries of the reels and, when the cassette is used, the release member is forced upward against the spring force by a brake release pin and the brake members cooperatively swing out of mesh with the serrated flange peripheries of the reels, setting the tape reels free to turn; a guide wall for guiding the release member for upward and downward movement is formed in one piece with the lower casing, with the upper part of the guide wall being overlapped with a corresponding part of the upper casing. A solid joint part for securing the upper and lower casings together is provided in the vicinity of the region where the release lever moves upward and downward along the front wall.
