    • A first target engine speed N1 and a high-speed control area F1 are set according to a command value commanded by a command unit. A second target engine speed N2 and a high-speed control area F2 defined on a low-speed side are set according to the first target engine speed N1. A pump displacement D and an engine torque T of a variable displacement hydraulic pump are detected so that a target engine speed N corresponding to each of the detected pump displacement and engine torque is detected according to a preset relationship between a the pump displacement D and the target engine speed N and a preset relationship between the engine torque T and the target engine speed N during an engine control at the high-speed control area F2. The drive of the engine is controlled so that the engine is driven at the target engine speed N.

    • A reference pattern vector is obtained from training patterns belonging to each class and is held as a parameter of an original distance function in a distance dictionary. A discriminant function is defined which has, as variables, the difference between respective corresponding components of a feature vector of each training pattern and the corresponding reference pattern vector and the square of the difference. Training patterns of all classes are discriminated with the original distance function and a rival pattern set, which includes patterns misclassified as belonging to a respective class, is derived from the results of discrimination of the training patterns. A discriminant analysis is made between the training pattern set of each class and the corresponding rival pattern set to thereby determine parameters of the discriminant function, which are held in a discriminant dictionary. The original distance function and the discriminant function are additively coupled together by a predetermined coupling coefficient to define a learned distance function, which is used to discriminate the training patterns to update the learned distance function.

    • A fluid operated pump displacement control system is provided wherein a self pressure is defined as a first control signal, and characterized in that an arbitrary switchable second control signal different from the first control signal is added to the first control signal, and a displacement is adapted to be switched to a displacement corresponding to a value of the second control signal as added to the first control signal. Further, a fluid operated pump displacement control system is provided comprising a control circuit connected to respective displacement control devices of variable displacement pumps and adapted to be operated by discharge pressure fluid from a discrete control pump. A variable torque control valve has a proportional electromagnetic solenoid provided in a circuit connecting the control circuit with the control pump and is adapted to produce a pressure reduction by a discharge fluid pressure of the variable displacement pumps and a propelling force of the proportional electromagnetic solenoid. A detector detects set output conditions of a prime mover for driving the variable displacement pumps, and current is supplied to the proportional electromagnetic solenoid according to the difference between a set reference rotational speed in each of the set output conditions and an actual rotational speed of the prime mover.
