    • A navigation system for a vehicle determines a recommended route to a destination among a plurality of possible routes to the destination based on total profile values of the plurality of possible routes. The navigation system guides the vehicle to the destination along the recommended route. Here, navigation system determines whether an upstream side section of one of the plurality of possible routes is located on a multi-lane road in a specific condition. The navigation system determines whether an exit road and an entrance road are connected to the multi-lane road on a common side of the multi-lane road. The navigation system sets an amount of increase to be reflected into the total profile value of the one of the plurality of possible routes based on determination results.

    • In an electronic map display system, predetermined linear display object data of all map data are stored in a first memory according to a predetermined coordinate system. Target point data other than the predetermined linear display object data are stored in a second memory in accordance with a relative coordinate system based on the predetermined linear objects. The data of the first memory are converted into display data of designated magnification rate by a first converter. The target point data of the second memory are converted into display data in accordance with a coordinate system based on the linear display objects by a second converter. A display signal is produced to display a map image in accordance with the data converted by the first and second data converters.

    • A map display system for displaying a linear object on a map in accordance with stored map data is disclosed. The coordinate components of at least two specified points on the linear object and other points thereon crossing straight lines drawn in spaced relationship and in parallel with the straight line connecting the specified points are stored as map data in a memory. The coordinate components thus stored are converted into a display coordinate by a display control to generate a display signal. In accordance with the display signal the linear object is displayed on a display within a predetermined display section.
