    • A two-stroke engine includes: an intake passage that opens out to a crank chamber; a first one-way valve provided in the intake passage and permits a flow of fluid toward the crank chamber; a scavenging port having an upstream end communicating with the crank chamber and a downstream end that opens out in a wall defining a side portion of a cylinder, wherein the downstream end communicates with a combustion chamber defined above the piston at least when the piston is at a bottom dead center, and communicates with a part of the cylinder below the piston at least when the piston is at a top dead center; and an air supply passage that communicates a part of the intake passage which is located downstream of the first one-way valve with an upstream portion of the scavenging port so as to supply air to the scavenging port during air intake.

    • An air intake structure for an engine provided with an air cleaner near an exhaust muffler includes: a case defining an air intake chamber; an air cleaner element housed in the case to divide the air intake chamber into a dust chamber and a clean chamber; a first air inlet formed in a part of the case close to the exhaust muffler such that the first air inlet communicates the dust chamber with an exterior of the case; a second air inlet formed in a part of the case distant from the exhaust muffler such that the second air inlet communicates the dust chamber with an exterior of the case; a communication opening formed in the case so as to communicate the clean chamber with an air intake passage; and an opening and closing mechanism for selectively opening and closing at least one of the first and second air inlets.

    • In a premixed compression self-ignition engine which is compact but capable of exerting a high output, an intermediate portion of a trigonal link is rotatably supported on a crankpin, a large end portion of a connecting rod is connected to one end portion of the trigonal link, and a swing link swingably supported on a fulcrum shaft is connected to another end portion of the trigonal link. The engine includes: an intake port open to a crank chamber; a reed valve mounted in the intake port; a scavenging port configured to guide fresh air from the crank chamber into a cylinder bore in a downward stroke of a piston; an exhaust port provided in a cylinder head and open to a top portion of the cylinder bore; and an exhaust valve configured to be opened before the piston opens the scavenging port in the downward stroke of the piston.
