    • An apparatus and method for effectively eliminating the risk of introducing air bubbles into a fluid delivery system such as to administer parenteral fluids to a patient. The apparatus comprises a baffle positioned within a drip chamber for deflecting fluid expelled from a fluid resistor in order to eliminate turbulence and the formation of micro-bubbles during rapid filling or flushing of the fluid delivery system. The drip chamber also comprises a filter membrane positioned across the outlet of the drip chamber. The filter membrane is attached to a filter carrier assembly which enables the filter membrane to be momentarily displaced so that air bubbles trapped beneath the filter membrane may escape.

    • A manometer for measuring the hydrodynamic pressure of fluids parenterally administered to a patient. The manometer includes a transparent housing which has a passageway formed in the housing that accommodates continuous flow of fluid therethrough. A pressure measuring chamber is formed in the housing and one end of the pressure measuring chamber is in fluid communication with the passageway. The other end of the pressure measuring chamber communicates with an enclosed air space. The fluid flowing through the passageway enters the pressure measuring chamber and rises to a level which is dependent upon the pressure of the fluid flowing through the passageway. Markings are provided on the housing of the manometer which permit the pressure exerted on the fluid flowing through the passageway to be read directly from the level of the fluid in the pressure measuring chamber. In one embodiment of the manometer, the enclosed air space may be adjusted so that the manometer may be normalized for use at any one of several different altitudes. A valve is provided so that the enclosed air space may be vented to the ambient atmosphere when it is desired to set the pressure reading to zero. In another embodiment of the manometer, the pressure measuring chamber is provided with a progressively decreasing cross-sectional flow area from its bottom to its top so that the pressure may be read in a linear fashion.

    • A needle valve and a method of manufacturing the needle valve. The needle valve has a metal needle with a leading end that is elongated and tapered so as to provide carefully restricted fluid flow along the length of the tapered end. A portion of the needle is threaded so that the position of the tapered end may be adjusted by screwing the needle. A housing for the needle is manufactured by placing the needle into a mold. The housing is then injection molded around portions of the metal needle. The molded housing forms an inlet port around the tapered end of the needle and a collar around the threaded portion of the needle. An outlet port is molded adjacent to the tapered end and is in fluid communication with the inlet port of the housing. As the housing cools, the plastic shrinks thus conforming the inlet port to the tapered end of the metal needle and creating a hermetic seal around the tapered end. A plastic knob is also molded onto the opposite end of the metal needle. The plastic knob may be rotated so that the tapered end of the needle may be screwed into or out of the inlet port of the plastic housing in order to control fluid flow therethrough.

    • An improved aortic cannula is provided for use in heart bypass surgery. The cannula includes an elongated tube with a terminal end. The terminal end has a ramped surface leading to the discharge opening, with a lip extending approximately 70.degree.-90.degree. to the longitudinal axis of the cannula at the bottom of the discharge opening. The curved surface and lip cause the blood to exit the cannula opening in a direction approximately 70.degree.-90.degree. from the longitudinal axis of the cannula, and in a direction toward the ascending aorta. With the improved cannula of the present invention, no blood is directed towards the aortic arch, thereby minimizing the risk of stroke from dislodged plaque commonly found in the aortic arch. The curved surface of the terminal end also reduces the blood flow turbulence, thereby decreasing pressure requirements. The width of the opening allows blood to be discharged in a broadcast band with a radius of approximately 90.degree..

    • A system for selective removal of certain components from plasma drawn from a patient comprises an extracorporeal blood circulation circuit and a cannula. The extracorporeal blood circulation circuit has an uptake line for transporting blood from the patient, a plasma separator, and a return line connected to the plasma separator for transporting selectively depleted blood from the plasma separator to the patient. The plasma separator is connected to the uptake line for receiving the blood, selectively removing plasma components (e.g., heparin) by separating plasma from whole blood and interfacing such plasma with an adsorption substrate, recombining depleted plasma, and reinfusing selectively depleted blood into the return line for transport to the patient. The cannula has an uptake conduit with an intake end and an exit end, and a return conduit, connected to the uptake conduit, with an outflow end and an entry end. The exit end is connected to the uptake line of the bypass circuit and the entry end is connected to the return line of the bypass circuit. Structure at the outflow end of the return conduit alters the direction of flow and directs selectively depleted blood being returned to the patient into the right atrium of the patient's heart when the intake end of the uptake conduit is disposed within the patient's inferior vena cava. An alternative cannula with washers may be inserted into a venous return cannula whereby recirculation and pooling of the selectively depleted blood is prevented.

    • An improved venous cannula and obturator for interconnecting the superior and the inferior vena cava to the venous return line of a heart-lung machine. The cannula includes a pair of resilient, divergent hollow branches. The branches are of unequal length. The longer branch is to be received within the inferior vena cava and the shorter branch is to be received in the superior vena cava. The open branch ends are thus longitudinally staggered when the branches are clamped together by the obturator to facilitate insertion of the branch ends through a single incision within the atrium and ultimate disposition of the branches in the superior and inferior vena cavae. The obturator includes an elongated rod with a hub having a pair of axial legs to be received within the branches of the cannula. The obturator is provided to be slidably received with minimal frictional resistance within the interior lumen of the cannula and the cannula branches. The obturator includes features to minimize frictional resistance to axial movement of the obturator in the cannula, and that facilitate release of the cannula branches to separate within the atrium.
