The disclosed utility knife having a replacement blade holder and a latching lever is capable of very economic manufacture, yet is dependable in operation.

    • A sensing system is provided for measuring various joints of a human body for applications for performance animation, biomechanical studies and general motion capture. One sensing device of the system is a linkage-based sensing structure comprising rigid links interconnected by revolute joints, where each joint angle is measured by a resistive bend sensor or other convenient goniometer. Such a linkage-based sensing structure is typically used for measuring joints of the body, such as the shoulders, hips, neck, back and forearm, which have more than a single rotary degree of freedom of movement. In one embodiment of the linkage-based sensing structure, a single long resistive bend sensor measures the angle of more that one revolute joint. The terminal ends of the linkage-based sensing structure are secured to the body such that movement of the joint is measured by the device. A second sensing device of the sensing system comprises a flat, flexible resistive bend sensor guided by a channel on an elastic garment. Such a flat sensing device is typically used to measure various other joints of the body which have primarily one degree of freedom of movement, such as the elbows, knees and ankles. Combining the two sensing devices as described, the sensing system has low sensor bulk at body extremities, yet accurately measures the multi-degree-of-freedom joints nearer the torso. Such a system can operate totally untethered, in real time, and without concern for electromagnetic interference or sensor occlusion.

    • A sippy cup assembly including a valve insert having a sheath and a stabilizing core is disclosed. The sippy cup assembly generally includes a container, a lid releasably coupled to and enclosing the container, and an annular seal for preventing liquid from leaking out of the container. The valve insert maintains form while permitting repeated removal and insertion, in addition to washing and long-term use, by providing that the stabilizing core has a rigidity greater than that of the sheath formed over the stabilizing core. The valve insert may be installed in the lid to correspond with a spout and air exchange aperture to permit egress of liquid and ingress of air upon application of suction by a user. When no suction is applied to the spout, the valve insert prevents leakage of liquid from the container.

    • A tape measure is disclosed which includes a housing defining a chamber and having a peripheral wall with an aperture or opening, and an elongated coiled measuring tape blade within the housing chamber. The coiled tape blade typically includes an end with a hook thereon extending outwardly through the aperture and is capable of automatic retraction into the housing. A positive locking mechanism mounted on the peripheral wall for locking the tape blade at a selected position while the tape blade is in an extended position outside the housing, and a temporary braking mechanism mounted on the peripheral wall for controlling the rate of retraction of the extended tape blade into the housing are also disclosed. The temporary braking mechanism is preferably located opposite the positive locking mechanism with the tape blade extending therebetween, whereby, when external manual pressure is applied to the temporary brake mechanism, the tape blade is forced against the positive locking mechanism, reducing the retraction rate of the tape blade during automatic retraction into the housing.

    • A tool, an attachment head and a power tool system, each for working on contoured surfaces, are disclosed. The numerous embodiments of the designs are made possible through the use of flexible structures that exhibit a phenomenon known as the “fin ray” mechanism because it was first observed when studying the motion of fish. Similar to the fish fin, the working surface of the disclosed tools behave unexpectedly when a lateral force is applied: they do not bend away, but curve toward the applied force. Generally, each “fin ray” tool includes at two flexing sidewalls or members joined at their tips to form an acute triangle. A plurality of struts hold the members apart while allowing elastic movement. The curve of the working surface allows the tools to provide greater contact on contoured surfaces.
