The video coding method includes: receiving channel status information indicating an error profile of the communication channel; and adaptively adding redundancy information into data packets divided by syntax with a layer configuration, based on the channel status information. The video decoding method includes: receiving an encoded video bitstream; identifying whether an additional layer is present and which layer has been added; and decoding corresponding layers based on the information about the additional layer. The video coding and decoding methods can be implemented in a video coder-decoder (CODEC) to avoid erroneous decoding in an error-prone channel, thus improving error-resilience of the CODEC.

    • A method and an apparatus for transmitting and recovering a video signal are provided. The method for transmitting a video signal that has a hierarchical structure of a frame, groups of blocks (GOBs), and macro blocks includes a transmitter inserting a plurality of resynchronization markers into each GOB to prevent the propagation of errors generated in a transmission channel. The insertion of the resynchronization markers includes assigning the number of resynchronization markers to the respective GOBs and inserting the assigned resynchronization markers into predetermined positions of the corresponding GOB. The positions are determined to minimize the mean error propagation cost based on whether respective macro blocks positioned between the resynchronization markers to be inserted are skipped. The present invention make it possible to prevent the propagation of an error when a video signal is transmitted over an error prone mobile network or radio network.

    • An error protection method for multimedia improves data recovery and channel throughput in channels which cause a random error and a burst error by using a rate compatible punctured convolutional code (RCPC) and an automatic retransmission on request (ARQ). In a process of decoding a plurality of packets of given information, the error protection method includes the steps of a) decoding one of the plurality of packets, b) decoding another packet when an error occurs during the decoding in step a), c) decoding a combination of the packets from steps a) and b) or a third packet when an error occurs in step b), and d) repeating step c) until the decoding error no longer occurs. The error protection method has the characteristics of both Type-1 and Type-2 ARQ methods. Therefore, one can obtain constant channel throughput in a channel containing burst errors, a channel containing random errors, and a channel in which the two types of error patterns coexist simultaneously.

    • A motion vector prediction method in an error resilient mode. In the motion vector prediction method capable of decoding backwards, motion vectors of macro blocks are calculated, and motion vectors of macro blocks each having one motion vector are predicted while moving to another macro block from left to right, and motion vectors of macro blocks each having four motion vectors are continuously predicted in a predetermined sequence to have correlation in prediction of the four motion vectors. Thus, in the motion vector prediction method based on the image signal compression method of the MPEG-4 or H.263 standard, the motion vector prediction is performed with continuity and correlation among the motion vectors, so that two-way decoding is possible during transmission of blocks with a predetermined packet, resulting in better error resilient characteristics.

    • An apparatus and method for masking video data errors by detecting direct current errors of a block unit during the decoding of video data. A video frame is composed of a plurality of macro blocks formed of a plurality of blocks, each having a predetermined size and a direct current (DC) value. The apparatus masks errors during the decoding of compressed video data, and includes a first frame storing portion for storing video data of a previous frame, and a second frame storing portion for storing video data of a present frame. An error detector calculates a direct current value difference between the respective blocks in the decoded video data and detects a specific macro block error, when the difference value is greater than a reference threshold. A DC error detector copies the data of the same position stored in the first frame storing portion in the position in which the error of the second frame storing portion is generated, when errors are detected in the error detector. On the other hand, the DC error detector writes the data in the second frame storing portion when no errors are detected. Errors within the video data are masked by determining whether the DC errors are generated. This method is preferred when a channel is passed by performing low rate video coding with respect to a video sequence using the H.263 standard, thus preventing error propagation.
