    • A lancet has a needle (2) embedded in a plastics body (1), its tip (3) projecting from the forward end but being initially encased in a cap (4). This cap (4) may be integrally moulded with the body, around the needle tip (3), and be sheared away before use. The needle (2) can be pushed back in relation to the body (1) after use, conveniently by applying the cap (4) to the tip (3), until the tip is safely flush with, or set back with respect to the leading end of the body (1). The rear end of the body (1) has a structure (9) to prevent the rear end of the needle (2) being pushed forwards again. To ensure that the tip disappears, the body (1) may be formed with an intermediate, resiliently flexible bridge (19) stiff enough to remain rigid during pricking. But when the needle (2) is forced back and pressure is also applied to the part of the body forward of the bridge (19), the needle (2) and that forward part move back with respect to the rear part of the body. Then the forward part is released to move forwards, sprung by the bridge (19), leaving the needle held by the rear part.

    • When a trigger of an injection device is released, a main spring (4) expands, driving a member (7) forwards. This compresses a weak spring (11), but a spring (5) is stiff enough to remain expanded. A syringe (2) is thus thrust forwards via a collar (9), so that a needle (3) projects from a barrel (1). The spring (4) continues to expand after the syringe has reached its forward position, with the spring (11) fully compressed, so that the stem (8) of the member (7) acts on a piston (14) within the syringe (2), to expel the dose while the spring (5) is caused to be compressed. The spring (5) ensures that the syringe is retained in its forward position during this phase.

    • A blood sampling device has a lancet (2) captive within a housing (1), to be released from a rearward primed position by pressing a trigger (18) on the side of the housing. A spring (3) shoots the lancet (2) forwards, momentarily to project its tip. The lancet (2) is initially held by a hooked tongue (25, 28) that latches behind a transverse web (10, 11) within the housing, the trigger action dislodging that engagement. The tongue (25) either springs back after release and so will abut the trigger (18) or the front of the web (10) if pushed back in an attempt to re-latch, or it will stay permanently deformed and thus be unable to re-engage the web (10). Alternatively, the trigger (18) may slice off the hook (28), making re-use impossible.

    • A lancet device has a two part housing (1) integrally molded in a folded-out configuration with a spring (2), a lancet body (3) encasing a needle (4), and a needle cap (5) concealing the needle tip. The spring (2) is a zig-zag connected at one end to one housing part (7) by a web (19) and merging at the other end into the lancet body (3). This is folded over with the spring (2) about the web (19) into the housing part (7), and the other housing part (6) is closer over about web hinges (8) and fastened. A trigger (9) is incorporated in the other housing part (6) and is deformable inwardly to release the lancet body (3) from a catch arrangement (14, 21) which holds the lancet retracted with the spring energized. The needle cap (5) can be used for the retraction before being removed.
