    • A drifting buoy sampler system for a stormwater discharge plume formed from stormwater discharged into coastal waters. The system compresan electronics sampling pod for collecting integrated water samples within the stormwater plume as the buoy system drifts with the stormwater plume near the water surface as the plume travels out to sea. The pod includes a watertight section including a GPS/radio module for providing GPS (geo-position) location information and a processor for monitoring and controlling the sampling rate, a pump module and a battery module; a passive sampler bag for collecting the integrated water samples; a free flooding section including a composite sample bag module such that the pump module pumps collected samples from the passive sampler bag to the composite sample bag module at a predetermined sampling rate and a ballast module for providing ballast to the system when drifting within the plume.

    • A drifting particle simulator buoy system for a stormwater discharge plume which includes a GPS unit for tracking the buoy GPS location at the surface of the plume and a drogue/winch unit including a drogue chute and winch package which is lowered to the seafloor at a controlled descent rate which is comparable to the descent rate of certain size sediment particles of interest within the stormwater discharge plume. The drogue chute controls lateral drift with the underwater current at approximately the same velocity of the sediment particles of interest. A control unit controls the drogue/winch unit, including controlling the speed of the chute/winch unit to mimic the settling rate of the sediment particles of interest. A bottom detection sensor determines the GPS location where the chute/winch package reaches the seafloor and determining the depositional footprint of contamination at the determined GPS location.

    • A method includes providing a sampling device having a sampling chamber therein, a pump operatively coupled to the sampling chamber, and a drive means coupled to the sampling chamber; situating the sampling device against an underwater boat hull having contaminants attached thereto, wherein situating the sampling device against the underwater boat hull causes water to be disposed within the sampling chamber; activating the pump to remove a portion of the water from the sampling chamber, wherein negative pressure is created within the sampling chamber and a watertight seal is formed between the sampling chamber and the underwater boat hull; activating the drive means to remove a sample of the contaminants from the underwater boat hull, wherein the sample of the contaminants is collected in the sampling chamber; deactivating the mechanical drive means; and sealing the sampling chamber, wherein the sample of the contaminants is stored within the sampling chamber.
