    • In some embodiments, the invention involves instrumentation of computer binary code and, more specifically, dynamically identifying shared memory accesses at runtime and instrumenting the shared memory access instruction code. Some embodiments use code caching to only hold the patched instrumentation. Other embodiments use code caching to hold the entire program and instrumentation. Shared memory accesses are identified using inaccessible memory address references to cause memory faults. The fault handler may emulate instrumentation in one instance and cause a just-in-time compilation of instruction traces with instrumentation into the code cache. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

    • An apparatus for applying latex sealing material to the facing closure flap and opposed body portion of an envelope includes a continuous belt driven conveying means having a generally triangular path, with the envelopes being fed onto the conveying means at one point in the triangle, with the conveying means gripping each of a series of envelopes along its folded edge portion opposite the flap. As the envelopes are conveyed, the flap is first unfolded through an angle of approximately 180.degree. to a generally horizontal position, after which the envelope is passed between an impression roller and a latex applicator roller at which latex is applied to the facing closure flap and the body portion of the envelope. The impression roller and glue roller are disposed at the second point of the triangular path of the conveying means, and next the envelopes are passed through a dielectric dryer for drying the latex sealing material. Upon leaving the dielectric dryer, the path of the conveyor means passes through the third point of the triangle, and progresses back toward the original starting point. At the latter point, means are provided for removing the envelopes from the conveyor means. By this arrangement, a single operator may readily feed and unload the apparatus of the subject invention. In the method for applying strips of latex to the envelope, the envelopes are fed to the conveying means, the flap closures are sequentially rotated to a generally horizontal position in order to next enable the application of latex to both the inside surface of the flap closure and the opposed body portion of the envelope, after which, the envelopes are passed through a dielectric dryer means to dry the latex material. Finally, the envelopes are removed from the conveying means and stacked.

    • A method and apparatus for placing an item of food into a cooking vessel capable of quickly achieving an effective frying temperature after placement into the hot cooking oil of a deep fryer is disclosed. The vessel includes a food containment area where food is placed in intimate contact with an interior wall of the vessel. Using a rack, the vessel is submerged into the oil to an effective depth such that the food item containment area remains below the surface of the cooking oil in the deep fryer while a vent of the cooking vessel remains above the cooking oil surface. Heat is substantially instantaneously transferred from the oil through the cooking vessel to the food item contained therein, causing the food to fry. Steam emitted from the food during cooking escapes through the vent.

    • A system and method for barrier submersion cooking comprising a thin walled plastic cooking pouch for receiving a food item effectively dimensioned such that when placed into a hot liquid cooking medium a vent remains above a top surface of the liquid cooking medium and a rack for lowering the vessel into the liquid cooking medium to an effective depth such that the food item received by the pouch is below the top surface of the liquid cooking medium and the vent is above the top surface of the liquid cooking medium. The pouch is formed of food grade pliable polymer film having a melt temperature above that of a temperature used in conventional hot oil frying processes, a heat transfer rate of an effective value to substantially instantaneously transfer heat from the liquid cooking medium to create an effective frying temperature upon the food item, and a pliability such that the pouch will collapse on itself when exposed to hydrostatic pressures when submerged within the liquid cooking medium, thereby effectively transferring heat to all food item surfaces.

    • A method and apparatus for placing a food item into a cooking vessel fabricated from a material with an effective heat transfer rate that will cause the temperature of the interior vessel wall to achieve effective frying temperature substantially instantaneously after placement into hot cooking oil. The vessel is effectively dimensioned so that it can be placed into the hot oil of the deep fryer while a vent remains above the top surface of the oil. A food item is inserted into the cooking vessel to fit snuggly into a food containment area of the vessel such that it intimately contacts the interior vessel walls. Using a rack, the vessel is lowered into the deep fryer's hot oil to an effective depth such that the food item containment area is below the surface of the oil while the vent remains above the top level of the hot oil. Due to the high heat transfer characteristics inherent in the vessel, heat is substantially instantaneously transferred from the hot oil through the cooking vessel to the food item contained within, causing the food item to start frying substantially immediately. Steam and hot vapors omitted from the food during the frying process escape through the vent opening of the cooking vessel.

    • A method of compiling an application to reduce the occurrence of speculative exceptions is described. The method includes the steps of compiling the application to provide a speculation table and an executable file, and obtaining profile information about said compiled application using representative data sets. The compiler includes a scheduler unit for rearranging the order of the instructions in the application to provide optimal performance. The speculation table comprises a number of entries corresponding to the instructions of the application, each entry including a tag identifying the instruction and a semaphore indicating whether or not the instruction is likely to cause an exception. The executable file is run using a number of representative data sets to profile information identifying those instructions that result in exceptions, and the tag of the instruction is stored in a log file. After the profiling has completed, the tags of the instructions causing exceptions are used to set the semaphores in the speculation table corresponding to the tag. The application is then re-compiled. During the recompilation, those instructions with their semaphores set; i.e. those instructions causing exceptions, will not be speculatively scheduled by the compiler.
