    • Methods and systems for integrated data management and block level storage management in a storage system having a controller with a multi-core processor. A hypervisor manages the multi-core processor such that at least one processor is used in a first virtual machine on which a block level storage management process is operable. The first virtual machine may also operate under the control of a real-time operating system. The hypervisor also defines a second virtual machine using one or more other processor cores and operates a data management application process optionally under control of a general purpose operating system. The optional general purpose operating system and the data management application process access storage devices by communicating through the hypervisor with the block level storage management process operable in the first virtual machine.

    • The present invention is directed to a method and system for providing, transparent mixed mode, object and block data storage transport. The system implements I/O modules capable of translating between communication protocols for providing common message passing multi-channel data transport for data storage while providing apparent I/O circuit exclusivity to controllers. The system is capable of converting object based transports for block storage, thus permitting both block and object based access to the storage complex. Implementing the system of the present invention allows for a common data transport system permitting component scalability and virtualization while allowing for target and initiator mode utilization of I/O interface circuits.

    • Data storage space in a data storage system is represented to the devices that access the data (e.g. “servers”) as a single virtual storage device containing logical volumes of data, even though the storage space is typically formed from several storage devices and possibly from arrays of storage devices containing multiple volumes of data. Therefore, the servers can issue the access requests through any available transfer path from the servers to the virtual storage device. However, I/O (input/output) devices control access between the servers and the devices that control access to the data (e.g. “array controllers”), so that the access requests from the servers are uniformly routed to the preferred array controllers independently of the transfer paths through which the servers issue the access requests.
