    • An apparatus is adapted to be used to create software and programming instructions for a distributed process control system having a user workstation remotely located from a distributed controller that controls one or more field devices using control modules. The apparatus includes a computer having a memory and a processing unit as well as a configuration application and a controller application stored on the computer memory to be executed on the processor. The configuration application is further capable of being executed on the user workstation of the distributed process control system to create the control modules for execution by the distributed controller while the controller application is adapted to be executed on the distributed controller to implement one of the control modules during operation of the distributed process control system. In this system, the configuration application, when run on the computer, creates a first control module capable of being used by the distributed controller within the distributed process control system and the controller application causes execution of the first control module within the computer to thereby simulate operation of the distributed process control system. The use of this system enables the simulation and testing of distributed process control system software and control modules without the use of the hardware, e.g., the distributed process controller and field devices, which will ultimately run that software.

    • A process control system includes a diagnostic monitoring and display functionality for viewing, in a coherent manner, diagnostic information relating to a process that operates over multiple devices and system components. Although the multiple devices and system components typically encompass widely different device types and operational standards, the process control system incorporates diagnostic information relating to all devices and presents this information to a system user in a uniform manner so that an operating control strategy and the diagnostic information are presented as though all control actions and diagnostic information were performed or generated at a single location. A user-defined diagnostic program is assembled as a set of function blocks and control modules and represented as a set of layers of interconnected control objects identified as modules which include informational structures accessed as attributes. Information is accessed using device hierarchy attribute addressing, supporting direct addressing of I/O signals from modules, bypassing the use of I/O function blocks and avoiding I/O function block behavior.

    • An adaptive multivariable process control system includes a multivariable process controller, such as a model predictive controller, having a multivariable process model characterized as a set of two or more single-input, single-output (SISO) models and an adaptation system which adapts the multivariable process model. The adaptation system detects changes in process inputs sufficient to start an adaptation cycle and, when such changes are detected, collects process input and output data needed to perform model adaptation. The adaptation system next determines a subset of the SISO models within the multivariable process model which are to be adapted, based on, for example, a determination of which process inputs are most correlated with the error between the actual (measured) process output and the process output developed by the multivariable process model. The adaptation system then performs standard or known model switching and parameter interpolation techniques to adapt each of the selected SISO models. After the adaptation of one or more of the SISO models, the resulting multivariable process model is validated by determining if the adapted multivariable process model has lower modeling error than the current multivariable process model. If so, the adapted multivariable process model is used in the multivariable controller.
