    • A system and method for selective scaling of an image by selective implementation of a window averaging processing technique or an interpolation processing technique. For enlargement scaling, the interpolation processor is implemented. For reduction scaling, the window averaging processor is implemented. For anamorphic scaling, the window averaging processor may be selected and implemented for reduction processing pursuant to a two-pass processing technique wherein the interpolator processing will be implemented thereafter. Image tags are provided for selective scaling of each area of an image according to the type of content of each area by selective implementation of a window averaging processing technique or an interpolation processing technique. The interpolation processor is implemented for line drawing areas of an image, and the window averaging processor is implemented for contone areas of the image. For anamorphic scaling with image tags, a two-pass system is provided which performs a first-pass reduction in one direction followed by a second-pass enlargement in the remaining direction, wherein the reduction is performed in the manner described for reduction scaling. A one-pass system is also provided which provides a second serially connected interpolator so that the aforementioned reduction can be performed on one dimension in a first step, followed by enlargement in the remaining direction in a following step on the same pass.

    • A method and system to convert an image described in a page description language to a contone image. The contone image is halftoned and encoded to generate image data including edge tag data and image data. A tagged state value of each pixel of image data within a predefined neighborhood of pixels is determined. The image data is filtered using a predetermined set of filter weighting values wherein each pixel of image data within the predefined neighborhood of pixels has an associated filter weighting value. A predetermined filtered image value is assigned to each pixel having a tagged state indicating an edge pixel. A summation of all filtered image values for the predefined neighborhood of pixels is assigned when the tagged state of the pixel is a non-edge pixel.

    • A high addressable multibit screening device and method for use in a PDL interpreter environment achieve improved printing resolution and quality. A PDL interpreter receives a PDL document from a host source, which identifies one or more objects that can be fully toned (black) or partially toned (line art or images). Each of these objects can be processed differently. Fully toned objects are processed within the interpreter and directly output in a predetermined output. Partially toned objects are sent to a high addressable screening module within the interpreter for processing prior to outputting in a desired output format. The high addressable screening module screens the partially toned objects to obtain multibit screened data for output. This can be achieved by converting an array of single threshold values to an array of three or more sub-threshold values in a way that preserves the pattern specified by the original threshold array (one bit per pixel image), but improves the quality of the rendered image relative to the quality of a one bit per pixel (per colorant) image. The partially toned data is then output with the fully toned objects for subsequent printing. This achieves an increase in available tints and spatial frequency for a given halftone pattern while reducing memory requirements.
