    • Interactive digital content for printed materials is provided using applications executing in a smart pen computing system. The applications and the printed materials may be developed by separate entities but appear well integrated from the perspective of a user of the smart pen computing system. Printed content produced by a first entity is obtained. The printed content is associated with a dot pattern. An application associated with the printed content and linked to the dot pattern is produced by a separate second entity. The application includes computer program instructions for, responsive to a selection within the dot pattern, invoking a function related to the printed content. The selection within the dot pattern may be made using a smart pen device, and the function may include presenting output to a user through an output device (e.g., a display or speaker) of the smart pen device.

    • A versatile electronic pen (100) includes a system for interacting with position data representing the pen's movement on a product (110) provided with a position-coding pattern (P). The system comprises an audio module which is operable to correlate the position data with audio data and to provide the audio data for output on a speaker device (104). The system also comprises at least one of a position storage module which is operable to store the position data in a persistent-storage memory (102), and a position streaming module which is operable to provide the position data as a bit stream for real-time output on an interface (105) for external communication. The operation of the modules is selectively activated as a function of the position data, and the modules suitably operate independently of each other.

    • A power management unit (40) for a portable electronic apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus is powered by at least a battery (42), and the power management unit is implemented as an integrated circuit.     • An electronic pen (10) has a force sensor (16) whose electrical resistance varies in accordance with the amount of force applied to the pen stem (14) of the pen. The force sensor (16) is a modular unit with an electrode and a closure, which are mutually arranged in an essentially electrically insulated initial position. The closure, which conveniently is cantilevered on the electrode, is adapted to receive axial forces from the pen stem (14) and thereby to be urged to an activated position in electrical contact with the electrode. The closure is also arranged, on relaxation of the axial forces, to automatically spring from the activated position back to the initial position. A control device is used in a method for controlling the pen based on an analog measuring signal from the force sensor (16) by a processor (22) comparing the analog measuring signal with a fixed reference signal and, based on the comparison, selectively initiating conversion of the analog measuring signal into a sequence of digital force values.
