    • An open medical system for deploying, supporting and organizing medical equipment and medical utilities comprising a utility connection, and a main assembly having an upper plate and lower plate held in fixed spaced apart relation by a plurality of spacers, at least one core located between the upper plate and lower plate, with each core having at least one utility supply line and one outlet. An open space bounded by the upper and lower plates and the inner surfaces of the cores is free of utility outlets. Equipment rails are connected between the spacers to support medical equipment.The utility connection can be a ceiling tube or a base assembly, permitting the supplying of utilities from above or below the main assembly. Alternatively, the system can be supported by a support which can be a base assembly and can rotate. A rotating base assembly can be used to restrict rotation, and several alternative means can provide indexed rotation. Alternatively, the support can be provided from above the main assembly by a fixed support, or a moving articulating arm, or from both above and below.

    • An equipment transfer device is provided that is transferable from one support to another support. The transport device is formed as a housing that has two spaced apart, generally parallel recesses, which form docking cups that are open to the bottom. Each docking cup is configured to receive a docking cone that is supported on a structure and is capable of moving in generally a vertical direction into engagement or out of engagement with their respective docking cups. A support post is also supported by the housing and protrudes from the upper end thereof as a base to which an equipment support structure is attached. In this manner the transfer device can be transferred from one docking cone to another with minimal handling and virtually no possibility of dislodgement.

    • Pliers with self-adjustment capability for applying a grasping force to a workpiece and for augmenting the grasping force applied to the workpiece which include a first plier member, a second plier member, a first pivot, a second pivot and a first biasing spring. The first plier member includes a handle portion, a jaw portion, an intermediate portion, a coupling interconnecting the handle portion of the first plier member to the intermediate portion of the first plier member, and locking device. The second plier member includes a handle portion, a jaw portion, and an intermediate portion disposed therebetween. The first pivot includes a shifting slot portion, a transitional portion, and a positioning slot portion with a generally arcuate portion formed in said intermediate portion of the first plier member. The first pivot also includes at least one pivot member extending into, and movable within, the shifting slot portion, transitional portion, and positioning slot portion. The first pivot permits the jaw portions to converge in response to movement of the handle portions toward each other for self-adjusting the jaws to the workpiece and applying the grasping force. The second pivot is defined by said locking device interacting with the second plier member. The first biasing spring acts in cooperation with the first pivot member for applying the grasping force to the workpiece and with the second pivot for augmenting the grasping force applied to the workpiece.

    • The invention includes pliers with self-adjustment capability for applying an initial grasping force to a workpiece and for augmenting the initial grasping force applied to the workpiece. The pliers are structured such that angular displacement of a handle portion of a first plier member is smaller than angular displacement of a jaw portion of the first plier member during an initial movement of the handle portions toward each other for applying the initial grasping force to the workpiece. In addition, the pliers are structured such that angular displacement of the handle portion of the first plier member is larger than angular displacement of the jaw portion of the first plier member to permit augmenting of the initial grasping force applied to the workpiece during a continued movement of the handle portions toward each other.
