    • The present invention provides a display medium including a pair of substrates; pixel electrodes disposed on one of the pair of substrates; a common electrode disposed on the other substrate of the pair of substrates; and a display layer, the common electrode includes two or more common electrode layers containing a first common electrode layer and a second common electrode layer which being disposed across a gap in a thickness direction, and electrical voltages thereof being controlled independently of each other, the first common electrode layer containing at least one electrode unit and at least one non-electrode area corresponding to a disposition of the pixel electrodes, and the second common electrode layer containing at least one second electrode unit, the at least one second electrode layer completely overlapping with at least the at least one non-electrode area of the first common electrode layer in a thickness direction.

    • A display medium drive device includes: a translucent display medium, a back substrate opposing the display substrate, a dispersant sealed between the display substrate and the back substrate, and plural types of particle groups with different colors and charge polarities that are dispersed in the dispersant so as to move in the inter-substrate space in response to an electric field; and a voltage application unit which, in a case of displaying a gradation of a color of a first particle group, applies a first voltage and which is a voltage equal to or greater than a threshold voltage needed to cause at least some of the first particle group to detach from the display substrate or the back substrate and thereafter applies a second voltage that has the same polarity as the first voltage and is lower than the threshold voltage.

    • A driving device of a display medium that including first and second particle groups migrating independently due to a first voltage being imparted for a first time period, forming aggregates due to the first voltage being imparted for a second time period, and the aggregates migrating due to a second voltage being imparted. The driving device includes a voltage imparting section that: imparts a third voltage that moves, to a display substrate side, a greater-amount-needed particle group for gradation display, in an amount of a difference between particles of the first particle group and second particle group needed for the display; when the greater-amount-needed particle group has an opposite polarity to the aggregates, imparts a fourth voltage that moves the aggregates needed to the display substrate side; and when the polarities are same, imparts a fifth voltage that moves the aggregates not needed to a rear substrate side.

    • There is provided a display device including: an electrophoretic display element including, plural types of particles, each of the respective plural types of particles being charged with the same polarity, differing in optical properties, and differing in either in migration speed and/or electric field threshold value for moving, a translucent display-side electrode, a first back-side electrode, and a second back-side electrode; and a voltage control section that controls the voltages applied to the display-side electrode, the first back-side electrode, and the second back-side electrode, such that the types of particles having the fastest migration speed from the plural types of particles, or the types of particles having the lowest threshold value from the plural types of particles, are moved to the first back-side electrode or to the second back-side electrode, and then the particles that moved to the first back-side electrode are moved to the display-side electrode.
