A method for allowing a base station to perform coverage loss detection of a mobile station in a broadband wireless access system includes unsolicitedly transmitting a first message wherein a bit for requesting ranging execution is set, to the mobile station, and upon receiving a second message for confirming the ranging from the mobile station prior to expiration of a first timer that begins to operate when the first message is transmitted, restarting operating a second timer established for the mobile station.

    • The present invention relates to a broadband wireless access system, and more particularly, to a handover method that can reduce a stop time in an entry before a break-type handover for performing more efficient handover, and to apparatus for performing same. A handover method for a terminal in a broadband wireless access system according to one embodiment of the present invention may include: receiving, from a serving base station, a handover command message including the information of a section in which scheduling for the terminal is not performed; transmitting a ranging code to a target base station during the section; and receiving information indicating the transmitted result of the ranging code from the serving base station.

According to one embodiment of the present invention, the present invention provides a method for a mobile station to receive information on a peripheral base station from a serving base station that operates in a mixed mode in the mobile communication system in which the legacy system and the advanced system coexist, and the method comprises the steps of: receiving a second message that includes first time information for indicating a time when a first message is broadcasted, in a first region for the legacy system of the serving base station through a second region for the advanced system of the serving base station, and receiving the first message from the first region by using the first time information.
