    • A disc-shaped information recording medium includes a laminate of recording layers on and from which an information signal can be optically recorded and reproduced from one side of the medium. Data areas are provided in the recording layers, respectively. The information signal can be recorded on and reproduced from the data areas while a laser beam emitted from an optical pickup is applied to the data areas. Optical recording test areas are provided in the recording layers, respectively. A test signal can be recorded on and reproduced from the optical recording test areas to decide optimum power values of the laser beam for signal recording. The test areas are out of overlap as viewed in a direction of propagation of the laser beam.

    • Test signals are sequentially generated. A laser beam inclusive of the generated test signals is applied to a preset test recording area in a disc-shaped recording medium to record the generated test signals thereon. A recording power of the applied laser beam is changed stepwise from a lowest level to a highest level through different intermediate levels. The lowest level, the highest level, and the intermediate levels the recording power of the applied laser beam takes are assigned to the test signals respectively. The recorded test signals are reproduced from the preset test recording area in the disc-shaped recording medium. An optimum value of a laser-beam recording power is decided on the basis of the reproduced test signals and at least one of the lowest level, the highest level, and the intermediate levels.

    • One of (1) a signal reproduced from a recording medium by a pickup device and (2) control information related to the reproduced signal is searched in a first search range for first information. A trial is made for detecting an optimum condition of a reproducing operation of the pickup device with respect to the recording medium on the basis of the first information. In cases where detecting an optimum condition of the reproducing operation of the pickup device with respect to the recording medium on the basis of the first information has been unsuccessful, one of (1) the reproduced signal and (2) the control information related to the reproduced signal is searched in a second search range different from the first search range for second information. An optimum condition of the reproducing operation of the pickup device is detected on the basis of the second information.
