    • A scroll compressor is more economically constructed and operated. The scroll compressor includes an orbiting scroll member, a non-orbiting scroll member, and a single phase electric motor, the single phase electric motor further includes a rotor, a stator having a plurality of slots, the stator being mounted concentrically with the rotor, an aluminum start winding that is wound within a portion of the slots distal from the rotor, a copper main winding that is wound with a portion of the slots between the aluminum start winding and the rotor, and a drive shaft coupled to the rotor, the drive shaft being configured to couple to the orbiting scroll member of a scroll compressor to cause the orbiting scroll member to orbit the non-orbiting scroll member.

    • An end shield for mounting on a stack of laminations forming the stator of an electric motor. The end shield has an inner face facing the stack, mounting openings alignable with holes extending into the stack, and a spacer on the inner face adjacent at least one of the openings to space the inner face from the stack so that a threaded fastener extending through the mounting opening and into a hole in the stack can more readily pull material surrounding the hole upwardly to form a protuberance on the stack to engage and resist movement of the end shield relative to the stack. The motor incorporates at least one end shield of this construction. According to the method of this invention, at least one end shield is installed on the stator.

    • An electric terminal connector block is provided with oblong tool openings that communicate with interior channels of the connector block and with openings in the motor wiring electric terminals positioned in each channel of the connector block. The oblong shapes of the tool openings enable insertion of tool pins through the tool openings and openings of the electric terminals and movement of the tool pins along the lengths of the oblong tool openings whereby the tool pins engage with the electric terminals and move the terminals relative to the connector block to insure that the terminals are locked in place in the connector block. In addition, the tooling used with the connector block is operated according to a method that insures that the terminals of the motor winding are moved to a position relative to the connector block where the terminals are locked in place. The tooling also provides conductor bars of a surge testing device that are connected to the electric terminals of the connector block as the terminals are properly positioned in the connector block.

    • A protector assembly and method for protecting motor windings from an overload condition. The assembly comprises a thermally responsive protector, a skirt, and a sleeve. The protector comprises a housing, an end cap, at least one terminal, and a thermally responsive member. The end cap covers an open end of the housing. The terminal extends through the end cap. The thermally responsive member is within the housing and adapted to be electrically coupled to the motor winding via the terminal. The protector is adapted to be positioned in heat-transfer relation wit the motor winding in a manner such that the thermally responsive member is responsive to an overload condition of the motor winding. The skirt and sleeve are of dielectric materials. The skirt is positioned on the protector in a manner such that the skirt surrounds the end cap and the terminal. The skirt is between the end cap and the sleeve. The skirt and sleeve are adapted to provide a dielectric barrier between the protector and the motor winding when the protector is positioned in heat-transfer relation with the motor winding.

    • A hermetic compressor and electrical connector therefor. A shell of the compressor defines an internal chamber and a motor positioned inside the shell within the chamber drives the compressor. The motor has a stator assembly including a winding. A hermetic terminal plug connects the winding to a power supply to energize the motor. The plug has an internal conductor pin electrically connected to a corresponding external conductor pin. The internal conductor pin protrudes into the internal chamber for connection to the winding and the external conductor pin extends away from the shell for connection to the power supply for energizing the motor. The compressor also includes a terminal block mounted on the stator assembly for supporting an end portion of the winding. The terminal block has a notch aligned with the internal conductor pin for receiving the internal conductor pin when the motor is positioned inside the shell. In this manner, the internal conductor pin is electrically connected to the end portion of the winding supported by the terminal block. The invention is also directed to a method of constructing such a compressor.
