    • A fireguard circuit for a power cable, which comprises a power line, a neutral line and a metal sheath surrounding the power line and the neutral line, includes a circuit breaker switch located in one of the lines. A solenoid sets the circuit breaker switch in either an open position or a closed position. An arc detection subcircuit connects the metal sheath to the solenoid and causes the solenoid to open the circuit breaker switch upon detecting the presence of an arcing condition between either the power line and the metal sheath or the neutral line and the metal sheath. The power connections for the solenoid and the arc detection subcircuit are derived from the power cable at the power source. In order to prevent the solenoid from overheating and/or burning upon the presence of an arcing condition, a protection switch is ganged to the solenoid and terminates the supply of power to the solenoid when an arcing condition is detected.

    • A fireguard circuit for a power cable, which comprises a power line, a neutral line and a metal sheath surrounding the power line and the neutral line, includes a switch located in one of the lines. A solenoid sets the switch in either an open position or a closed position. A first silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) causes the solenoid to open the switch upon detecting the presence of an arcing condition between the power line and the metal sheath. A second silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) causes the solenoid to open the switch upon detecting the presence of an arcing condition between the neutral line and the metal sheath. The second SCR is connected in parallel with the first SCR, the anode of the first SCR being connected to the cathode of the second SCR and the cathode of the first SCR being connected to the anode of the second SCR.

    • A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) for regulating the flow of current through a pair of conductive lines extending between a power source and a load. The GFCI includes first and second pairs of terminals located at opposite ends of the conductive lines, the first pair of terminals being designated for connection with the power source and the second pair of terminals being designated for connection with the load. A pair of electrical outlets are connected to conductive lines at a location between the first and second pairs of terminals. A circuit breaker is located in the conductive lines between the electrical outlets and the first pair of terminals. A ground fault detection circuit detects the presence of a ground fault condition in the conductive lines and, in response, generates a trip signal which is used to energize a solenoid that is ganged to the circuit breaker. A reverse wiring circuit is provided which generates an artificial ground fault condition when the power source is improperly connected to the second pair of terminals rather than the first pair of terminals. Once the power source is properly connected to the first pair of terminals, the reverse wiring circuit is instantly permanently disabled.

    • A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) for use with a power cable which connects a power source to a load. The GFCI includes first and second pairs of terminals which are located at opposite ends of the power cable, the first pair of terminals being designated for connection with the power source and the second pair of terminals being designated for connection with the load. A pair of electrical outlets are connected to the power cable at a location between the first and second pairs of terminals. A first circuit breaker is located in the power cable between the pair of electrical outlets and the second pair of terminals. A ground fault detection circuit detects the presence of a ground fault condition in the power cable and, in turn, generates a trip signal which is used to energize a solenoid that is ganged to the first circuit breaker. In one embodiment, a second circuit breaker is located in the power cable between the first pair of terminals and the pair of electrical outlets, the second circuit breaker being ganged to the first circuit breaker. In this manner, the GFCI provides ground fault protection regardless of whether the power source is connected to the first or second pairs of terminals. In another embodiment, a reverse wiring circuit is provided which generates an artificial ground fault condition when the power source is improperly connected to the second pair of terminals rather than the first pair of terminals.
