A release element (15) is provided for preventing movement of the projectile=s initiator (11) into an armed position. The release element (15) is held in an engagement position by the cartridge cover (1). Also, a channel (5) is formed between the initiator (11) and the projectile=s explosive charge (8) and a slidable shielding means (6) is provided therein. An insert element (10) is also located in the channel for preventing movement of the shielding means (6) into its armed position. The insert element (10) is held in place by the cartridge cover(1). When the projectile exits the cartridge cover (1) and the weapon=s barrel following firing, the release element (15) is configured to move out of the engagement position to release the initiator (11), and the insert element (10) is configured to move out of the channel (5) to allow the shielding means (6) to move into its armed position.

The projectile further comprises a shielding device positioned between the initiator and the explosive charge of the warhead, which shielding device is slidable from a safety position in which the shielding device shields the explosive charge of the warhead from the initiator, to an armed position in which the initiator is capable of detonating the explosive charge of the warhead. The shielding device is slidable from the safe to the armed position in response to the initiator moving from the safe to the armed condition.

摘要： The invention provides a safety system for a small arms projectile in which an initiating device is impacted by a firing member in order to detonate a main explosive charge. The system requires the firing member to be retained in a safe position in relation to the initiating device by at least two independent mechanisms. The firing member is initially supported in a forward position, in which it assists in holding the initiator device in a safe condition, and is caused to move rearwardly, through inertia, when the projectile is fired, destroying one of the retaining mechanisms and allowing the initiator device to adopt a primed position in which it can be activated by the firing member which at this time is retained by the other retaining mechanism which is automatically released when the projectile is in flight. The initiator device may, when held in its safe condition, be skewed with respect to the main explosive charge and may incorporate or support a shield disposed, in the safe condition, between the initiator device and the main explosive charge.
