    • Apparatus and a method for burnishing gears incorporating a pair of gear racks having opposed forming faces with teeth spaced therealong for meshing with a toothed gear received therebetween to provide the sole support for the gear as it is rotated by rack movement while the rack teeth burnish the gear teeth. A loader is positioned on one lateral side of the gear racks and includes a movable gripper mechanism that positions the gears to be burnished between the racks for meshing engagement therewith as the racks are driven by a reciprocal drive mechanism of the apparatus. Grippers of the gripper mechanism grip the gears during loading and have pushers that push the burnished gears to a delivery guide on the opposite lateral side of the gear racks from the loader. A movable guide member of the guide is fixed to one of the gear racks and receives the burnished gears to feed the gears to a stationary guide member as a pusher fixed to the other gear rack moves the burnished gears during reciprocal driving of the gear racks. A conveyor for feeding the loader includes gear carriers supported by a continuous chain trained over a pair of spaced sprockets. One of the sprockets is adjustably supported by a chain tensioner while the other sprocket is driven by a cylinder and indexing arm through a one-way clutch in order to move the chain and the gears carried by the carriers on the chain.

    • A tool for pressure forming teeth on the periphery of a cylindrical workpiece comprising a body having a leading end and a trailing end with a front portion extending rearwardly from the leading end and a rear portion extending from the front portion to the trailing end. A plurality of identical teeth are provided on the rear portion, each of which has a configuration fully conjugate to the configuration of the teeth to be formed on the workpiece. A plurality of teeth are formed on the front portion, the tips of which are spaced from the plane of the tips of the teeth of the rear portion at progressively increasing distances from the juncture of the front and rear portions to the leading end. Each tooth on the front portion is congruent with the teeth on the rear portion from the tips of the teeth of the rear portion toward the root thereof for a distance corresponding to the height of the respective front tooth. In one arrangement, the front teeth are each inclined with respect to the rear teeth and are otherwise of identical size to the rear teeth. In another arrangement, the body has a root line common to both the front and rear portions, and the front teeth are each of progressively decreasing height above the root line from the juncture of the front and rear portions to the leading end of the body.

    • A grinding machine and dresser therefor for dressing a grinding wheel of the machine to grind a crooked configuration in a workpiece. The dresser includes a holder for a template having the cutting profile of the grinding wheel as well as a holder for a cutting tool that dresses the wheel. The tool holder is mounted for movement with a template follower in an antifriction manner so that the cutting tool dresses the grinding wheel with the cutting profile. Cutting profiles for grinding precise toothed configurations are possible with the dresser. A carriage of the machine on which the dresser is mounted is slidably movable with respect to a base of the machine by axial movement of a dual threaded drive screw having right and left-hand threaded portions spaced axially along its length. First and second nuts respectively fixed on the base and the dresser each receive one threaded portion of the drive screw so its rotation moves the dresser relative to the carriage in the same direction and the same distance the carriage is moved relative to the base. The relative movement of the dresser with respect to the carriage causes a dressing of the wheel in a manner that maintains the same cutting depth of the workpiece before and after dressing. A hydraulic actuated pawl and ratchet power unit rotates the drive screw a controlled amount to index the carriage and dresser for a dress cycle. An electric screw brake is actuable to prevent the drive screw rotation and an electric nut brake that holds the first nut against rotation on the base during the dress index is then released to permit manual or power driven rotation thereof so as to drive the screw in a vertical direction without rotation and thereby raise or lower the carriage without the relative movement of the dresser.

    • A rotary forming machine and a rotary tool utilized therewith for performing a forming operation on a workpiece. A work spindle rotatably mounts the workpiece about a first axis and a pair of tool spindles which each support a plurality of the tools are rotatably mounted about spaced second axes on opposite sides of the first axis. Each tool has a partially circular forming face extending about the associated tool spindle axis for an angle less than 180 degrees with forming projections that engage the workpiece. Associated pairs of the tools on the two tool spindles cooperate with each other to simultaneously form the workpiece in an opposed relationship to each other. Each tool includes a metallic body with a leading end and a trailing end between which its forming face extends as do base and side wall surfaces. The rotary tools preferably have elongated shapes with maximum heights that are approximately 25 percent of their length. The tool spindles are mounted for movement toward and away from each other to permit the forming of workpieces of different sizes, while a pair of tension members prevent movement of the tool spindles away from each other. The forming projections on the rotary tool are disclosed as teeth for providing a splining or gear forming operation. During forming of a workpiece, a double enveloping worm gear drive train for the tool spindles, a timing gear drive for the work spindle, and a drive control cooperate to provide precise forming.

A conveyor for feeding the loader includes gear carriers supported by a continuous chain trained over a pair of spaced sprockets. One of the sprockets is adjustably supported by a chain tensioner while the other sprocket is driven by a cylinder and indexing arm through a one-way clutch in order to move the chain and the gears carried by the carriers on the chain.
