    • A wireless communications system and method adapted for use in automotive applications for enabling automatic, high-speed, wireless voice and/or data communications link to be established between a wide variety of external devices and various electronic subsystems of a vehicle. The apparatus includes first and second RF transceivers which are operated in accordance with a communications specification to enable a seamless, automatic communications link to be created when the two RF transceivers come within a pre-determined proximity of one another, for example, within up to 100 meters of one another. Information from one device is then automatically transmitted over the wireless communications link to the other device. In various implementations the apparatus is used to obtain information from a home PC, a work PC, a notebook PC and various other electronic devices, as well as information from the Internet, which is displayed and/or played back for the user by various subsystems of the vehicle while traveling in the vehicle. Other applications involving retail and manufacturing applications are disclosed by which the apparatus is used to facilitate and/or expedite manufacturing processes or retail transactions via one or more high-speed, secure, wireless communications links which are created automatically and seamlessly between the RF transceivers of the apparatus of the invention.

    • Vehicles embodying the present invention include a receiver, demodulator and control circuit which interfaces with various vehicle options to allow receipt of a vehicle address and control signal which is a personalization code to control the operation of one or more vehicle accessories. A display is provided for the display of information to the vehicle operator confirming the state of operation of an option change or addition when has been requested by the vehicle operator. In one embodiment of the present invention, the vehicle includes a display for displaying a telephone number from a land-based paging system to the vehicle operator. In another embodiment of the present invention, the receiver demodulator and display unit receives alpha-numeric information when allows messages and/or telephone numbers to be displayed to the vehicle operator. In yet a further embodiment of the invention, one vehicle personalization control system provides anti-theft protection such that upon receipt of a predetermined code, once the vehicle ignition has been turned off, the vehicle cannot be restarted.

    • A method for controlling the operability and functionality of an electronic device with an electronic device detection system begins by determining whether an electronic device is located within the vehicle and proximate to an operator of the vehicle. The electronic device detection system defines a restricted zone in which electronic device use is partially or fully prohibited and a safe zone in which all or some of the functionality of electronic devices is enabled. Once it is determined that an electronic device is in use and within a restricted zone, a determination is made as to whether any usage prohibition conditions are satisfied. If usage prohibition conditions are satisfied, then particular functions of the electronic device may be disabled in a restricted zone. If prohibition conditions are not met, the electronic device may be totally enabled, partially enabled to allow certain functions, or the electronic device is never disabled.

    • A system for selecting a user speech profile for a device in a vehicle includes a control module having a speech recognition system and a memory. The speech recognition system is configured to process audio signals and includes a speaker enrollment function configured to create a user speech profile for at least one user. The memory is configured to store a plurality of user speech profiles created by the speaker enrollment function. The system may include an external device configured to transmit a control signal to the vehicle including an identifier. Alternatively, the system may include a user input device configured to receive an input command from a user that includes an identifier. The control module uses the identifier to select a user speech profile from the plurality of user speech profiles and the speech recognition system uses the selected user speech profile to process audio signals from the user.

    • A docking station is incorporated within a vehicle accessory, such as a visor, and includes sockets for receiving paging receivers which include rechargeable batteries for charging the clip-on paging receivers to the visor when not in use. The visor includes a paging transmitter with a control switch associated with each of the plurality of paging receivers for transmitting an individual code associated with each of the receivers. Receivers comprise clip-on modules which attach to the visor for storage and recharging of their rechargeable battery. The paging receiver includes an alarm, such as a beeper, so that when a paging signal is received, the beeper sounds notifying the individual that the transportation is awaiting. The docking station visor may also include a trainable garage door opening transmitter and the paging transmitter can be integrated with the trainable garage door opening transmitter to provide multiple functions.
