    • Positive and negative electrodes include exposed current collector portions at both lengthwise ends, and these exposed current collector portions are bent such as to protrude from the widthwise edge of the electrodes to form welding pieces. The positive and negative electrodes and a separator interposed therebetween are wound around into a flat shape having an ellipsoidal cross section. The welding pieces of the positive and negative electrodes protruding from opposite sides of the wound electrodes are welded together with respective leads. According to this configuration, a simple but high-quality current collector design capable of stable electrical connection in a high power output prismatic electrochemical element is provided.

    • A lithium ion secondary battery of the invention includes an electrode structure including an electrode group composed of a strip-shaped laminate or winding including a positive electrode in which a positive electrode active material layer is attached to a positive electrode current collector, a negative electrode, and a separator; a positive electrode current collector plate including aluminum foil; and a negative electrode current collector plate electrically connected to the negative electrode. The positive electrode has, at one longitudinally extending end edge of the laminate, a positive electrode current collector-exposed portion protruding beyond the negative electrode. The positive electrode current collector plate is electrically connected to the positive electrode by applying a non-corrosive flux containing a fluoride to at least one of the positive electrode current collector-exposed portion and the positive electrode current collector plate, and then welding the positive electrode current collector plate to the positive electrode current collector-exposed portion.
