    • A system and method for safe and effective backup and restore of parallel server databases stored in data storage systems. Parallel server databases allow multiple nodes in MPP (Massively Parallel Processor) or SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processor) systems to simultaneously access a database. Each node is running an instance (thread) which provides access to the database. The present invention allows for online or offline backup to be performed from any node in the system, with proper access to all control files and logs, both archived and online, whether the files are stored in raw partitions in the data storage system, or local on certain nodes. Two different types of external restore supported: complete external restore and partial external restore. In a complete external restore, all spaces will be restored to the most recent checkpoint that was generated while creating an external backup. If users lose only a portion of the data (which is more typically the case), a partial external restore may be performed.

    • A system providing intelligent, integrated external backup and restore for databases and DBMS (data base management systems) which are stored on data storage systems. An interface between the data storage system backup system and the DBMS allows the backup system to work with the DBMS for greatly enhanced backup and restore. External backup and restore frees up the host systems from having to pipeline the data from the data storage system to the backup system. The backup system is able to determine which files stored in the data storage system should be backed up, based on querying the DBMS. This invention is useful for systems including RAID data storage system storing databases (including relational and object oriented), and provides for partial as well as complete backup and restore options.

    • A method and apparatus for directly connecting very large data streams from an archive command into a backup data system using an “intelligent process.” An output stream-is piped into an intelligent pipe-reading process and distributed over a set of temporary data stores built from raw storage resources. A pipe interface process supervises backup of each filled data store, while the remaining output stream continues to be piped into another available data store. The backup system completes archiving of the datastream, keeping a catalog of the datastream storage locations. To retrieve the data, the intelligent process is run in reverse as a pipe-writing process, requesting data from the backup system. Retrieved data traverses the data stores from the backup system and are pumped into the pipe-writing process for delivery to the pipe output file identified by the retrieve or import command.
