    • A means for detecting the application of glue to a defined area of a moving box blank includes a capacitance device, one plate of which is formed by a sensing surface positioned adjacent the path of box blank movement, with the other plate being formed by the defined area of the box blank and the applied glue. There are means for applying an electric signal to the sensing surface and means for sensing variations in said signal caused by the presence or absence of glue. There is a control circuit for enabling the detector, which control circuit enables the detector after a glue application and after a period of delay consistent with movement of the box blank from the glue applicator to the detector.

    • The compact digital resolver/encoder assembly comprises a resolver and a flexible printed circuit board having a number of electronic components for decoding the resolver mounted on the flexible printed circuit board. A generally cylindrical container is provided having a cylindrical wall, a closed end and an open end. The circuit board is folded into a generally cylindrical shape and received in the container separate from the resolver. The circuit board is insulated from the container by an electrical insulating potting compound situated in the container and surrounding the circuit board. The resolver is received in the container and is spaced a predetermined distance from the encapsulated circuit board. Preferably a voltage regulator is mounted to an inside wall of the container and electrically coupled to the circuit board. Also, preferably, wire conductors between the resolver and the circuit board are longer than necessary to allow the resolver to be positioned outside the container when the potting compound is inserted in the container.

    • The method of forming a compact resolver/encoder assembly which is impervious to moisture, comprises several steps. First a number of electronic components of the resolver/encoder are mounted on a flexible printed circuit board. The circuit board is then folded into a generally cylindrical envelope and placed in a generally cylindrical container having a closed bottom end and an upper open end. The folded circuit board tens to unfold against the inner surface of the cylindrical wall of said container. Then a form made of stiff but flexible paperboard is inserted within the cylindrical envelope and tends to unfold to take on a tear drop cross section. Next a heat insulating potting compound is inserted into the generally annular space in the container between the form and the cylindrical wall of the container where the folded, printed circuit board is located. The potting compound is allowed to set around the circuit board with a generally cylindrical space defined within the form in the middle of the container. Finally, a stator and rotor assembly are mounted within the cylindrical space and fixed to the container.

    • A means for sensing the amount of a liquid bonding agent applied to secure a corrugated medium to a liner includes a capacitance device, one plate of which is formed by a sensing surface positioned adjacent the corrugated medium, liner and the applied liquid bonding agent. The other plate of the capacitance device is formed by the moving corrugated medium, liner and the applied bonding agent. There are means for applying an electric signal to the sensing surface and means for sensing variations in that signal caused by the amount of the liquid bonding agent applied to the corrugated medium and liner. The sensed variations in the applied electric signal are used to control the application of the bonding agent to the corrugated medium. The capacitance device may include a plurality of individual sensing areas having a width and spacing related to the width and spacing of the tips of the corrugated medium. The periodic signal generated by the capacitance device may be used to measure the actual amount of bonding agent, the residual moisture level in the liner and the amount of material passing from the single facer which is applying the liner to the corrugated medium.
