    • A method for protecting traffic in a radio access network connected to at least two core networks. The method includes maintaining a core-network-specific authentication protocol and a radio-bearer-specific ciphering process, and generating, for each ciphering process, a count parameter including a cyclical sequence number and a hyperframe number (HFN) which is incremented each time the cyclical sequence number completes one cycle. For each core network or authentication protocol, a first radio bearer of a session is initialized with a HFN exceeding the highest HFN used during the previous session. When a new radio bearer is established, the mobile station selects the highest HFN used during the session for the core network in question, increments it and uses it for initializing the count parameter for the new radio bearer. At the end of a session, the mobile station stores at least part of the highest HFN used during the session.

    • The invention relates to ATM systems, and particularly to mobility and call control management therein. A wireless ATM network comprises at least on ATM switch, and base stations connected to the ATM switch by a user-network-interface interface. In addition, at least one controlling network element of a conventional PLMN network, such as a mobile telephone exchange or a base station controller, which is responsible for the mobility management and call control, is connected to the ATM network by the UNI interface. A permanent virtual channel is provided between the base station and the controlling PLM element for PLM-specific signalling (signalling related to, for example, call control, mobility management or radio resource management). The ATM switch therebetween forwards the signalling without interpreting it in any way. The PLMN element remotely controls the ATM switch to switch a virtual connection between the base station and another point according to the ATM standards.

    • An automatic repeat request mechanism (such as Type II/III hybrid ARQ) which includes (soft or hard) combining of initially transmitted and retransmitted versions of a packet, is provided for retransmission of erroneous packets. According to the present invention, in association with each retransmission, there is outband signaling from a transmitter to a receiver that unambiguously indicates when, e.g. the exact time or physical location, the first transmission of the packet was carried out, so that it is possible to combine the retransmitted version with the previous version(s) of the packet. Soft combining requires that the initial packet and the retransmitted packet be identical. In an embodiment of the invention, in order to overcome this problem, the information that needs to be changed between the initial transmission and the retransmission(s) of a packet is sent outband with other outband signaling information. Thus, the retransmitted packet can be maintained unchanged and the requirement for identical packets in soft combining is met.

    • The invention relates to a method for reconfiguring a cellular radio network connection comprising a network part having a connection to a mobile station through at least one radio bearer.
