    • The invention, which can be utilized by a player to practice his or her competence in any sport in which a ball is hit, thrown, kicked, or otherwise propelled, comprises a ball-returning device in conjunction with an imaging device disposed in relation to the ball-returning device such that a practicing player can observe his or her form while propelling balls against the backboard. In a first embodiment the invention comprises a substantially vertical backboard having as at least one portion thereof a mirror surface. The mirror surface may be part of the backboard which would normally return a ball hit against it or the mirror surface may be a portion of the backboard which is not normally hit by practice balls projected against the backboard. Lines of various sorts may be provided on the backboard surface to delimit desired areas of the backboard at which it is desirable to aim practice strokes. In one alternative embodiment, a see-through barrier (such as an elastic net or transparent plastic partition) serves as the ball-returning component of the device, with a mirror disposed in back of the barrier to reflect an image of the practicing player. In other alternate embodiments, a video camera and monitor are disposed in relation to the backboard or transparent barrier so as to allow the practicing player to see himself or herself while practicing.

    • A kit for repairing an eyeglass frame that has lost a hinge pin comprises a container with at least one hinge pin therein, the hinge pin being locally plastically deformable at one end thereof, and instructions for installing the hinge pin in the frame. The replacement hinge pin is deformable either by softening or melting with a small flame or other heat source, or alternatively has a soft end portion which is mechanically deformable. The hinge pin has a first end with a diameter larger than a largest body diameter of a body of the pin and further has an easily detachable handling tab attached to the first end, the pin being again locally deformable at a second end thereof. In this case the a user inserts the pin into a hinge of the eyeglass frame, deforms a second end of the pin to give it a diameter greater than the maximum body diameter of the hinge pin, whereby the earpiece is pivotally secured by the pin, and then removes the tab. A first possibility for the tab is a generally flat, thin member that is easily grasped by a thumb and forefinger. A second possibility for the tab is a series of connected identical hinge pins that are easily separated.

    • An improved combination lock comprises any type of conventional combination lock having nonnumerical indicia thereon including a plurality of patches of different daylight fluorescent colors for indicating a predetermined combination. Alternatively, nonnumerical indicia on the lock can comprise pictures of different animals, or different geometrical patterns including sets of at least three parallel lines. One implementation comprises a rotatable inner portion inside an outer housing, with sequential positioning of the inner portion with respect to the outer housing serving to unlock the lock. A second implementation includes a plurality of individually rotatable portions, the rotation of which to a predetermined configuration of relative orientations unlocks the lock. Other implementations include electromechanical or electronic combination locks utilizing a keypad and keys with nonnumerical combination indicia thereon comprising colors, either daylight fluorescent or ordinary, pictures of different animals, or different geometrical patterns including sets of at least three parallel lines.

    • A self-mobile cat toy capable of simulating intermittent life includes a rodent-like shell partially or wholly containing an electrical power source mechanically and electrically connected to motor-powered wheels or a tread mechanism for moving along the ground. The power circuit includes an orientation-dependent switch which is closed or open depending on its orientation, so that when played with by a cat, the toy will cease to move in certain orientations and begin to move when pawed into other orientations. In another embodiment the powered wheels or tread are replaced by a vibrating mechanism. In yet other embodiments the cat toy is externally controlled by the pet owner, through either a long cable with a switch at the end or through a radio or ultrasonic transmitter-receiver system.
