    • A coupling between a floating conduit and a mooring buoy that carries a pipe end with a clamp for receiving and holding the mouth of the floating conduit, comprises a cardan joint on the pipe end of the mooring buoy. The cardan joint has a cardan ring that supports a buoyant crosshead for vertical swinging movement about a horizontal axis. The crosshead has a remote control operating mechanism so that when the floating conduit is brought close to the pipe end for coupling thereto, the crosshead can be swung downward against its buoyancy to permit horizontal movement of the floating conduit. Then when the floating conduit is in position, the crosshead can be permitted to float up to cradle the floating conduit; and clamps on the crosshead can then be secured to the floating conduit.

    • A hinged pipe joint comprises at least one flexible sleeve surrounded by a cage-like cardan structure. The joint structure makes it difficult to remove and replace the flexible sleeve. The invention provides a housing to which the hinge structure is connected, with a flange secured therein to which a flange of the flexible sleeve is connected. The housing has a closable access door in alignment with the axis of the flange, so that when the cover of the door is open, the detached flexible sleeve and the flange may be removed and replaced through the door. If two flexible sleeves are connected to the housing at angles to each other, then two doors are provided. The flanges have curved portions secured thereto that serve as continuations of the pipeline within the housing.

    • The pinion that drives a loaded vertical rack is locked by means of a second pinion also in mesh with the rack and a locking device disposed between the pinions and having relatively slidable parts each of which carries rack teeth in mesh with one of the pinions. By limiting the sliding of the two parts relative to each other, the locking member bears part of the load to which the pinions are subjected so that the pinions in locked position are partly unloaded and the entire structure can withstand a higher load.
