    • In an aircraft terrain warning system utilizing a radar altimeter wherein the rate of closure to the terrain is compared with the aircraft's altitude above the terrain to generate a warning signal when the closure rate is excessive for a particular altitude, the closure rate signal is limited and biased depending upon the aircraft's closure rate and configuration in order to significantly increase the time response of the system while at the same time reducing nuisance warnings. The amplitude limit on the closure rate signal, is varied, above a predefined altitude, as a function of the closure rate signal in oreder to provide increased warning times at greater closure rates. Circuitry, responsive to the aircraft's flap positions, is also provided to alter the characteristics of rate limiter so as to provide warning parameters that more accurately reflect operating conditions at lower aircraft speeds.

    • A casing in the form of cylindrical hollow body is terminated at one end by a base and is optionally provided with a hanger. The other end of the cylindrical hollow body is covered by a cover. The cover has a gauze arranged in a frame. The gauze meshes have a clearly defined cross-sectional surface. Useful organisms are placed in a protected manner in the hollow body and only those useful organisms having a desired size can pass through the gauze. The casing is treated by chemical or physical means so that it will remain intact and the organisms contained therein will be protected for a time period predetermined by such treatment. As the casing is made from non-toxic materials, its decomposition at the end of the intactness period does not adversely effect the environment.

    • In order to provide a more accurate representation of aircraft pitch attitude for use in aircraft head up display devices, a circuit for generating a computed pitch signal responds to a longitudinal accelerometer and a vertical gyroscope within the aircraft wherein the computed pitch signal is generated by adding to the gyro pitch signal a correction factor computed by subtracting the value of the computed pitch signal from an inertial pitch signal derived from the longitudinal accelerometer. In order to compensate for the effects of aircraft acceleration on the longitudinal accelerometer signal, a computed acceleration signal derived from the difference between the longitudinal accelerometer signal and the gyro pitch signal is subtracted from the longitudinal accelerometer to generate the inertial pitch signal. To further compensate the systems for long term errors in the gyro pitch signal, the combined longitudinal acceleration and gyro pitch signal is subtracted from a differentiated air speed signal and the resulting difference signal is integrated over time to generate an acceleration correction signal that is applied to the computed acceleration signal.

    • An article adapted to be dispensed from aircraft onto large surface areas for the purpose of beneficially influencing the environment which employs a hollow casing having at least one opening whereby when at least one item for producing such influence is stored in the casing, the item will be released through the opening to the adjacent surface areas to initiate the influence on the environment after the casing is in landed position. At least one of the items is disposed in the casing. A structural arrangement is secured to the casing to prevent the casing when in landed position from being in direct contact with the surface area, thus shielding the item from the adverse influence of local weather.

    • The invention relates to a selective process for the preparation of N-L-.alpha.-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine-1-lower alkyl ester which comprises:A. reacting an L-aspartic acid 4-arylmethyl ester with a(i) 1,3-diketone; or(ii) acylacetic ester; in the presence of a base to form the salt of(i') L-N-(1-alkyl-2-acyl-vinyl)-aspartic acid 4-arylmethyl ester; or(ii') L-N-(1-alkyl-2-alkoxycarbonyl-vinyl)-aspartic acid 4-arylmethyl ester, and then either:(1) reacting salt (i') or (ii') with an organic or inorganic acid halide having the formula X-A, wherein X represents a halogen and A has the meaning indicated hereinafter, or with an acid anhydride to form ##STR1## wherein R represents an alkyl radical with 1 to 6 carbon atoms;R' represents an alkyl or alkoxy radical with 1 to 6 carbon atoms;Ar represents the phenyl, nitrophenyl, halogenphenyl or alkylphenyl radical; andA represents an acyl with 2 to 12 carbon atoms, alkoxycarbonyl with 2 to 12 carbon atoms, or a phosphoric acid, phosphorous acid, sulfuric acid, sulfurous acid or sulfonic acid radical; and reacting ester (I) with an L-phenylalanine lower alkyl ester; or(2) reacting a salt of (i') or (ii') with a phosphorazo-L-phenyl lower alkyl ester; to form(i") N-L-.alpha.-N'-(1-alkyl-2-acyl-vinyl)-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine-1-lower alkyl-4-arylmethyl ester; or(ii") N-L-.alpha.-N'-(1-alkyl-2-alkoxycarbonyl)aspartyl-L-phenylalanine-1-lower alkyl-4-arylmethyl ester;B. reacting (i") or (ii") with a strong acid to split off the respective N-(1-alkyl-2-acyl-vinyl) or N-(1-alkyl-2-alkoxycarbonyl-vinyl) protective group and produce:(iii) N-L-.alpha.-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine-1-lower alkyl-4-(arylmethyl)ester; andC. subjecting ester (iii) to catalytic hydrogenation to selectively split off the 4-(arylmethyl)-ester group and leave the N-L-.alpha.-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine-1-lower alkyl ester product.Novel intermediates for the synthesis are also disclosed.

    • In a terrain warning system wherein the rate of the aircraft's closure to the terrain is compared to the aircraft's altitude above the terrain in order to generate a warning signal for excessive closure rates, a circuit is provided to inhibit the warning signal when the aircraft begins to climb in response to the warning signal and to measure the altitude gained by the aircraft resulting in the reactivation of the warning signal if the aircraft has leveled off before gaining a predetermined amount of altitude. The circuit includes: a memory element to indicate that a warning signal has been generated; a circuit to generate a climb signal in response to a barometric rate of change signal indicating the aircraft is climbing; and an integrating circuit responsive to the barometric rate signal to determine the amount of altitude the aircraft has gained while climbing. If the aircraft has not gained the predetermined amount of altitude before leveling off, as indicated by the climb signal, the memory element will reactivate the warning signal.
