    • A constant delivery rotary pump includes a rotor which rotates in a pumping chamber formed in an inner member and which carries round with it a set of pumping elements engaging the wall of the chamber and moving radially with respect to the rotor to perform a pumping action. The inner member is mounted in an outer member for sliding movement parallel to the line of action of the resultant of the fluid pressure acting in the pumping chamber. The outer member is fixed with respect to the axis of rotation of the rotor. A spring resists movement of the inner member relative to the outer member due to said resultant, and damped control means is provided for controlling in dependence on the pump delivery pressure the position of the inner member in its sliding movement. The control means includes a pair of wedge elements which are mounted side by side on their bases in the outer member and each of which has an apex in engagement with an inclined cam surface on the exterior of the inner member. The spring causes the inner member to rotate the wedge elements on to their bases, whilst the pump delivery pressure is applied between the elements and tends to rotate them about the outer side edges of their bases thereby moving the inner member against the spring force to control the pump delivery pressure.

    • A servomotor primarily for rack and pinion power steering comprises a piston rod extending through the end members of a cylinder and carrying a piston assembly within the cylinder. An operating shaft encircling the piston rod extends through one end member and has at its end adjacent the piston assembly a valve member which cooperates with the piston assembly to control the motor. A spring urges the piston assembly and the valve member axially into a central portion of the valve but permits relative displacement of the piston assembly and valve member axially relative to each other. The valve member is arranged to control a supply of pressure fluid, in response to movement of the operating shaft to move the valve member in one direction or the other from said central position relative to the piston, to move the piston in the same direction as the initiating movement of the valve member relative to the piston.

    • The specification describes an attachment for a rack cutting machine having a reciprocating rotary cutter for cutting the rack teeth, a holder for a workpiece on which the rack teeth are to be cut, and feed means for moving the cutter and the holder relative to each other in a direction lengthwise of the workpiece at a speed which bears a constant ratio to the speed of rotation of the cutter, which attachment comprises means for superimposing on this relative movement a secondary movement in said direction to displace the cutter and the holder from their relative positions determined by the feed means by a distance which varies in dependence on the instantaneous relative positions of the holder and workpiece in said direction. Instead of being in the form of an attachment, the components may be built into a rack cutting machine.

    • A fluid motor arrangement comprises a double-acting piston element which is slidably mounted in a cylinder element and the two axial sides of which have unequal effective areas, and a valve for controlling the admission of pressure fluid to the cylinder at opposite sides of the piston. The valve comprises a valve body member in which a spool valve member is slidably mounted. The valve body provides therein two chambers the pressures in which respectively act upon axially oppositely facing surfaces of the spool valve member, the ratio of the effective areas of said surfaces to each other being the same as that of the effective areas of the two sides of the piston. The (first) chamber having the larger of the two effective areas of the spool valve member is in permanently open communication with the cylinder at that side of the piston having the larger effective area, and the (second) chamber having the smaller of the two effective areas of the spool valve member is in permanently open communication with the cylinder at that side of the piston having the smaller effective area. The construction and arrangement is such that when the valve is operated in either sense from an initial position to actuate a movement of the fluid motor, the resulting variation in the pressures applied in said first and second chambers of the valve tends to return the valve to its initial position.
