    • A composition for coating paper includes at least one pigment selected from the group consisting of polymeric pigments, aluminosilicates, calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, talc, barium sulfate, zinc oxide, aluminum trihydrate, amorphous silica and silicates; wherein the pigment is dispersed in an aqueous dispersion of a polymeric binder that is a copolymer of vinyl acetate, ethylene, at least one ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acid or salt thereof and optionally one or more other monomers, wherein vinyl acetate units constitute in a range of 70-90 wt % of the polymeric binder and ethylene units constitute in a range of 10-30 wt % of the polymeric binder; and wherein the polymeric binder has a mean particle size in a range from 0.1 μm to 0.3 μm and the optional one or more other monomers do not include any N—(C1-4) alkylol (meth)acrylamide; and wherein the aqueous dispersion of the polymeric binder is free of alkylphenol ethoxylate surfactants and includes a nonionic surfactant component consisting of a polyethylene oxide/polypropylene oxide block copolymer and optionally one or more other nonionic surfactants, and optionally includes an anionic surfactant component consisting of one or more anionic surfactants.

    • Improved aqueous emulsion vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) polymer adhesives for use in packaging applications and on difficult to bond surfaces such as polyethylene, poly(ethylene terephthalate), and oriented polypropylene. The VAE polymers contain about 55-80 wt % vinyl acetate, 15-45 wt % ethylene, and 0-30 wt % of one or more additional ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable monomer, based on the total weight of monomers. Cast films of the VAE emulsion polymers of this invention should have a tensile storage modulus (test frequency of 6.28 rad/sec) within the area encompassed by the following data points: 1.times.10.sup.5 and 2.times.10.sup.7 dynes/cm.sup.2 at 23.degree. C., and 1.times.10.sup.3 and 2.times.10.sup.6 dynes/cm.sup.2 at 70.degree. C.; preferably within the area encompassed by the following data points: 1.times.10.sup.6 and 1.5.times.10.sup.7 dynes/cm.sup.2 at 23.degree. C., and 3.times.10.sup.4 and 9.times.10.sup.5 dynes/cm.sup.2 at 70.degree. C.

    • This invention relates to an improvement in a process for forming a carton from paperboard stock comprising the steps: applying an aqueous based adhesive to select parts of a paperboard carton blank obtained from a paperboard feedstock; drying the aqueous based adhesive; folding the select parts of the adhesive coated carton blank onto cooperating parts of the paperboard blank; and, heat sealing the select and cooperating parts thereby forming the carton; wherein the aqueous based adhesive is comprised of a vinyl acetate/ethylene polymer formed by emulsion polymerization and having (a) a crystalline melting point (Tm) ranging from 35 to 110° C., preferably 50 to 90° C.; measured at a heat rate of 20° C./minute and, (b) a tensile storage modulus of at least 1×104 dynes/cm2 at 115° C. measured at 6.28 rad/sec.

    • A pigmented latex composition having a solids content in a range from 60 wt % to 95 wt % includes a) an aqueous dispersion of a polymeric binder that is a copolymer including units of vinyl acetate, ethylene and at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or salt thereof, the polymeric binder constituting in a range from 10 wt % to 30 wt % of the composition; wherein vinyl acetate units constitute in a range of 70-95 wt % of the polymeric binder, ethylene units constitute in a range of 5-30 wt % of the polymeric binder and ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid units constitute in a range from 0.75 wt % to 5 wt % of the polymeric binder; the aqueous dispersion of the polymeric binder is free of alkylphenol ethoxylate surfactants and phosphate ester surfactants; and the polymeric binder has a weight average particle size in a range from 0.1 μm to 0.3 μm; b) one or more pigments constituting in a range from 30 wt % to 50 wt % of the composition, selected from the group consisting of polymeric pigments, aluminosilicates, calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, talc, barium sulfate, zinc oxide, aluminum trihydrate, amorphous silica and silicates; c) one or more plasticizers; and d) one or more pigment dispersants.
