    • A loop fastener well-suited for attaching tags to articles of commerce. In one embodiment, the loop fastener comprises a flexible filament having a first end and a second end. In addition, the loop fastener comprises a socket, the socket having a top surface and a bottom surface, the socket being provided with a channel and a flange, the channel extending transversely from the top surface to the bottom surface, the flange extending partially into the channel, the first end of the flexible filament being disposed on top of the top surface of the socket, the flexible filament extending away from the socket generally perpendicularly relative to the channel. The loop fastener further comprises an inserting element disposed at the second end of the flexible filament, the inserting element including a plug insertable into the channel and past the flange, the plug being engageable with the flange after the plug has been inserted therepast so as to keep the plug from being easily withdrawn back past the flange.

    • A button attaching device includes a top member and a bottom member which are hingedly connected together, the bottom member including an anvil. The button attaching device further includes a needle block assembly mounted on the top member. The needle block assembly includes a block of material, a pair of rodless fastener dispensing needles and a fastener. The fastener is shaped to include a foot formed at each end of a filament which can be removably mounted on one of the pair of rodless fastener dispensing needles. In one embodiment of the present invention, the needle block assembly is removably mounted on the top member and is sized and shaped so as to fit within a needle block assembly storage compartment formed in the bottom member. In another embodiment of the present invention, a plurality of needle block assemblies are interconnected to form a needle block carousel which is rotably mounted within a hollowed portion formed in the top member. The carousel comprises a mounting block rotably mounted on the top member, each of the plurality of needle block assemblies being spring mounted on the mounting block.

    • An apparatus for dispensing an individual plastic fastener from continuously connected ladder stock including an elongated side member having a plurality of T-bars interconnected by severable connectors. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a hollow, gun-shaped casing having a barrel portion and a handle portion. The front end of the barrel portion has an opening into which a hollow slotted needle is removably mounted. A triggering mechanism, which includes a pivotally-mounted trigger, is connected to the handle portion of the casing. A slider assembly, which is actuated by squeezing the trigger, includes a slider adapted to travel along longitudinally extending rails formed along the inside of the barrel portion of the casing. Movement of the slider is coupled to a feeding/severing/ejecting assembly, which collectively functions to feed a T-bar disposed at one end of the elongated side member into the hollow slotted needle, to break the severable connector connecting the inserted T-bar to the remainder of the elongated side member, and to eject the inserted T-bar from the hollow, slotted needle. In a preferred embodiment, the severable connector is broken by pivoting the rear portion of the connector away from the front portion of the connector.

    • A needle particularly well-suited for use in the dispensing of plastic fasteners of the type comprising a filament having a cross-bar at a first end thereof; each of the cross-bar and the filament including a first flat side, the first flat sides of the cross-bar and the filament being coplanar. The needle includes a stem portion. The stem portion terminates in a tip at its front end and is shaped to define a longitudinal bore and a longitudinal slot. The longitudinal bore is shaped to receive the cross-bar, and the longitudinal slot is shaped to permit the filament to extend therethrough while the cross-bar is disposed within the longitudinal bore. The longitudinal bore has a first flat side, and the longitudinal slot has a first flat side, the first flat sides of the longitudinal bore and the longitudinal slot being coplanar. Preferably, the cross-bar and the filament collectively have a “d”-shaped cross-section, and the longitudinal bore and longitudinal slot of the needle collectively have a corresponding “d”-shaped cross-section. The stem portion is preferably made of a boron/nickel alloy and is preferably made using electroforming. A conventional needle base portion may be insert-molded onto the rear end of the stem portion to facilitate removable mounting of the stem portion in a fastener attaching tool.

    • Plastic fastener, fastener clip, fastener dispensing tool and method of fastening objects. According to one embodiment, the plastic fastener comprises a flexible filament having a length of about 4.3 mm and a tensile strength of about 2 pounds, a first transverse bar located at one end of the flexible filament, and a second transverse bar located at the opposite end of the flexible filament. The fastener clip, which preferably does not contain a runner bar, comprises a plurality of identical fasteners of the aforementioned type, each of the fasteners being arranged in a parallel, side-by-side, spaced relationship. A connector post connects the first transverse bars of adjacent fasteners, and a connector post connects the second transverse bars of adjacent fasteners. An extra transverse bar is connected by a connector post to the first transverse bar of the last fastener, and another extra transverse bar is connected by a connector post to the second transverse bar of the last fastener, the extra transverse bars not being interconnected by a flexible filament. The tool, according to one aspect, is a hand-held tool adapted for use with the above fastener and comprises (a) a casing, the casing being provided with a needle opening; (b) a hollow, slotted needle, the hollow, slotted needle being slidably movable back and forth between a retracted position disposed entirely within the casing and an extended position extending through the needle opening, the hollow, slotted needle being adapted to receive a transverse bar of the fastener; (c) an ejector rod, the ejector rod being slidably movable back and forth through the hollow, slotted needle to eject the enlargement disposed therein; and (d) an anvil coupled to the casing and extending in front of the needle opening, the anvil being positioned so that the hollow, slotted needle, when in said extended position, does not extend therebeyond.
