    • Method and apparatus for converting one form of energy into another form of energy with the use of a closed, continuous loop passageway containing a plurality of freely movable, mechanically unrestrained bodies which travel around the passageway in one direction only. Force is applied to successive ones of the bodies in one region of the passageway to thereby propel the bodies around the passageway. At a point removed from the aforesaid region, at least a portion of the kinetic energy of the propelled bodies is converted into electrical energy or a compressed fluid. Thereafter, successive ones of the bodies are returned back to the starting region where they are again propelled in one direction by application of a force thereto. The bodies, usually in the form of spheres, are propelled by expansion of a gaseous medium due to combustion of a gaseous fuel mixture or by a traveling magnetic field. The kinetic energy of the bodies is extracted either by causing the propelled bodies, formed from magnetically permeable material, to pass through an electromagnetic field to convert some of the kinetic energy to electrical energy, or by compressing fluid between the bodies to provide energy in the form of a compressed fluid.

    • Computing and control logic generates control signals in response to input data specifying the coordinate positions of a plurality of points of a three-dimensional pattern. The control signals control the generation and cooperation of changes in energy levels within a medium which is capable of undergoing a change in optical properties in response to energy level changes within the medium, thereby producing within the medium an optical pattern representing the three-dimensional display of the threedimensional pattern. In the preferred embodiment, the medium is a display volume of material in which a luminous display of the three-dimensional pattern is created by selective two-step excitation of emission centers in the volume. Other media, including a halographic recording medium, are also disclosed.

    • Described herein is a device useful for extraction of core samples from, e.g., muscle tissue of live animals and carcasses. The device is comprised of an extractor body sharpened at one end and hollow to receive a core cut by the sharpened end as it advances into sampled tissue, the forward end of the body being provided with a blade inwardly pivotally responsive to, e.g., muscle tissue backflow to sever the base of the core from surrounding tissue. The extractor is preferably affixed to thrust-generating means which withdraw the extractor body and contained core from sampled tissue when a predetermined degree of advance has occurred.
