    • A braking device for vehicles includes a multi-phase generator on the vehicle driven by movement of the vehicle for generating multi-phase electric current. Induction motor means includes a stator and a part which moves relative to the stator during movement of the vehicle. The stator is fixed to the vehicle against movement relative thereto. The generator is connected with the stator of the induction motor for producing a traveling magnetic field in the stator which exerts a force on the moving part in a direction tending to propel the vehicle in a direction opposite to its then direction. This applies a braking force to the vehicle.

    • A novel eddy-current and hysteresis brake for track-bound vehicles is provided which incorporates resisting skids or rollers to eliminate wear problems associated with prior art brakes of this type. The particular magnetic construction of the pole surface is critical to obtain maximum hysteresis and eddycurrent forces with a uniform air gap and the minimum energization. The pole surface is also formed to prevent undesirable air currents or the accumulation of dirt or other disturbing external build-up, while providing maximum pole surface and winding relationships. An alternating pole configuration is provided along the direction of movement of the vehicle.

    • The invention relates to a structure to guide and support a vehicle by magnetic forces which utilizes the repulsive properties of permanent magnets attached to the vehicle and to the support in such a way that like poles are facing each other, which poles extend in the direction of motion, and are of alternating polarity transversely to the direction of motion. The relationship of the permanent magnets to achieve optimum suspension without generation of eddy currents and hysteresis losses is important. Further, the invention achieves lateral stability of the vehicle utilizing partial permanent magnetic forces and partial electromagnetic forces. The amount of vehicle support by the permanent magnets is mechanically controllable to compensate for environmental factors.

    • A magnetic seal for a rotary shaft includes a cylindrical magnetic member surrounding the shaft. The magnetic member includes an outer circumferential seal cooperating with a housing through which the shaft projects. A cylindrical magnetically attractive member also surrounds the shaft and includes an inner circumferential seal cooperating with the shaft. The magnetically attractive member rotates with the shaft and the magnet is stationary with the housing. A sealing member is interposed between the magnet and the magnetically attractive member. Magnetic attraction between the magnet and the magnetically attractive member draws the two members together to form a seal with the interposed sealing member. The magnet is molded of anisotropic ferrite permanent magnet material which is oriented in a radial direction during molding and is also radially magnetized.
