    • The invention relates to a rail fastening on a tie having fastening screws and loop-shaped tension clamps in which the track width can be adjusted horizontally in a stepless manner using wedge elements, the rail being arranged on a ribbed plate, the ribs of which run at an angle to the rail and a wedge that can be moved in the longitudinal direction of the rail being arranged between rail foot and the ribs. The wedge is preferably guided on the support. This makes possible effective horizontal lateral displacement of the rail or modification of the track with the use of simple and inexpensive plastic parts.

    • Biomass is converted to short chain alcohols such as butanol by a process which comprises (1) reacting biomass with an oxidizing agent to produce unoxidized aromatic and/or phenolic compounds and C1-6 linear and branched, saturated and unsaturated carboxylic acids; (2) separating the unoxidized aromatic and/or phenolic compounds from the C1-6 carboxylic acids; (3) anaerobically fermenting the C1-6 carboxylic acids in the presence of an anaerobic bacterium in its solventogenesis phase to produce a solvent comprised of butanol and non-fermentable carboxylic acids. The products of the process can be used as fuel and/or fuel additives.

    • In the field of wellbore data logging it is known to use isotopic neutron sources in a neutron capture logging technique. However, continuous isotopic sources are unpopular for regulatory and safety reasons.Attempts to employ neutron generator tubes to generate neutron bursts for use in the neutron capture technique have encountered various difficulties in areas connected with signal identification and processing.The disclosure relates to a method of data logging in which a low burst rate neutron generator tube is pulsed at comparatively low rates to generate neutron bursts that are captured in atomic nuclei in a proximal formation. The gamma radiation arising from the neutron capture is detected over a gating intervals defined by temporally distinct points. The gamma detector output is integrated over the gating interval to provide a measure of the decay rate that is independent of the pulse rate. Consequently the signal processing problems do not arise.
