    • An image scanner operates in a normal mode in which an image scanning process is executable; and a power saving mode in which less electric power is consumed than in the normal mode. The image scanner includes: a CPU for switching the image scanner between the normal mode and the power saving mode; an original size sensor circuit; and an FPGA connected to the CPU and the original size sensor circuit. In the normal mode, the CPU configures, in the FPGA, a normal-mode circuit needed for the image scanning process. When the image scanner transfers from the normal mode to the power saving mode, the CPU configures, in the FPGA, a power-saving-mode circuit for communicating with the original size sensor circuit, and stops the original size sensor circuit from operating. The power-saving-mode circuit is smaller in circuit size than the normal-mode circuit.

    • A light barrier detects an object which interrupts a beam of light of the light barrier. A light transmitter transmits a light beam in the direction of a reflector and a light receiver receives a reflected portion of the light beam. The improved light barrier has a reflector which is made as a cylindrical reflector column having a plurality of retroreflecting elements aligned toward the outer surface. The diameter of the reflector column is considerably smaller than the extent of the light beam perpendicular to the cylinder axis so that an optically effective detection beam of light is formed between the sensor and the reflector column whose cross-section at the sensor is determined by the light transmitter and, in direct proximity to the reflector column. The cross-section is determined by the areal overlap of the light beam with the reflector column.

    • An ink discharge unit includes a plurality of nozzles and corresponding ink propelling mechanisms for the nozzles, and configured to discharge ink through the nozzles in accordance with drive signals to drive the ink propelling mechanisms, an ink temperature sensor is adapted to measure a temperature of ink at the ink discharge unit, and a negative-pressure controller is configured to control negative pressures acting on menisci formed in vicinities of the nozzles by surface tension of ink at the ink discharge unit, wherein the negative-pressure controller is configured to work with a discharge of ink by the ink discharge unit, operating for a measured temperature of ink by the ink temperature sensor equal to or higher than a first reference, to control the negative pressures to a first value, and for a measured temperature of ink by the ink temperature sensor lower than the first reference, to control the negative pressures to a second value which is lower than the first value.
